Satellite Radio

Looking to do Sirius Sat Radio soon. Would love to have the OEM version. $$$$$ . I've been getting some ideas, not sure if they would work. Is this the Sat Radio connection if the radio had one? (1st pic)Also, the connection for the Sat antenna is under the passenger seat. Can it be that easy to buy a tuner from Sirius (2nd Pic), connect the antenna to the Head unit. The only thing I cannot figure out is how to connect the power, ground/serial data cable (3rd Pic-Not Good, Sorry)? They call for another cable at times,(An adapter cable to match with your head unit) Where does this cable go? And last but not least, Dealer says the radio has to be flashed then, how can we get that done. Any one got any ideas, $700.00 for OEM/Dealer Sirius-GET SERIOUS!!

Flashing the radio, or the computer system in general, can only be done by a Mini Service Center, as best I know. The system is not "plug and play", but the software has to be updated to let the Head Unit know that the new hardware is available and how to interpret the audio signal.

Sorry... on the upside I think the cost includes a year, so there's $150 anyways.

Well did somemore investigating. Removed the front pasenger seat and the connectin is Tyco connection with Two Fiber Optic lines plus the SMB Antenna line. Plenty of room underneath there for a Amp. Just like people are doing. Did ya'll see this post:

https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...d.php?t=116773

I also checked my software versionfor my radio 02-2007 5.47.0 You can do this by:
Proceed as follows to call up the Service mode:

Ignition ON
  • Switch off the radio
  • Switch on the radio again
  • Within 8s for a duration of 8s, press the button for manual station-search function (The M Button)
  • The radio switches into the Service mode
Anyone out there with OEM Sirius already, what is your software version? Check out this web page
http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts...67&hg=65&fg=05

If I have older software, could I use the older Sirius satelitte radio? Would I have to sit thru 3-4 hrs of new programming? Just thoughts.

Ok, this is driving me mad. DyeLooper, where is the panel in the floor? I've taken my seat out and attempted to rip up the carpet. I cannot find it. All I find is carpet. I wonder if build date matters.

Now that I think about it, since sat radio wasn't offered when I ordered my car, it may not have been wired for it. I guess I'm out of luck. Bummer.

My car was built in early March and is wired for it, even though the Sirius setup wasn't available at that time. Keep searching, you'll find it.

My research led me to the same Sirius receiver you mentioned earlier. I too am looking for an alternative to spending $1070 to have the dealer install Sirius. I have a 2007 Mini Cooper Coupe with an August build. it should be Sirius ready. That receiver on the Sirius site is very tempting at $50. I just would hate to have anyone other than Mini do the installation on a leased car.

Would you mind posting pictures of you Sportster installation as well as the antenna? I may have to go that route as well.

Update, I cancelled the Sportster 4 from Tiger direct. I pre-ordered the Sportster 5 from Crutchfield.com, am awaiting delivery when they come out, any day now. See my gallery for Antenna location

I installed a Sportster 5 in my wife's '07 MCS today...actually just finished a few minutes ago.

Can whomever has hacked into the OEM Sirius antenna please post some info as far as remaking an antenna cable to hook up to the Sportster unit?

I ran the included antenna, but am not happy with the look of it.

My wife's '07 MCS was an early build. We took delivery near the end of February '07. Hers did not have the trap door under the passenger side seat, but I made a small slit in the carpet and found the connectors.

I need to order the ProClip mounting solution for her car. I got real creative and used the included windshield suction mount and some double-back foam tape to mount the Sportster 5 in the right side cup holder.

Again, any help with the stock anntena connection would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Here's a question... does my 2007 MC come with the satellite antenna already built in to the shark fin or do I still need another one? I know that the Minis built after June or so are more satellite ready than others. Does that extend to the antenna?

I'm not sure what you mean, about some later models being more satellite ready that others. My car was built in early March and came with all of the satellite wiring, including that for the antenna in the shark fin. You should be fine.

Interesting, the main reason I wasn't going to attempt a self-install of my SIR-PNR2 was that I didn't want to attempt to run the antenna wire. Where could I look to find instructions for DIY installation of a receiver?

I just looked under my seat and there was no access through the carpeting. I did find some connectors in a panel behind the right back seat, though.

The Sirius connection on your Mini are under the carpet. I made a small 4" slit in the carpet and found mine.

It looks like I'm going with a Stratus 4 Plug & Play installed by Circuit City. The guy there seemed like he knew what he was talking about. He said in his experience, the only receiver that will work 100% with the OEM is the one provided by Mini for $575. He also said that the antenna that's pre-wired would not work with anything else. I'm scheduled to have it done on Monday. He's going to install it in the cubby behind the cup holders. He said he usually puts the antenna up on the dash right under the window and it works fine. He's also going to hardwire the power. I'll just have to plug in to the AUX and I'll be good to go.

Does this all sound like it makes sense?

I've had mine now for a week, It's still loose sitting in different spots. I would re-think the cubby spot, thats alot of looking down (UNSAFE).
