Is the sunroof glass or plexi?

I had my windows tinted this past weekend and the window tinter said the sunroof was plexiglass and if he tinted it, the car may heat up in the sun, then if it rained, the sunroof may shatter.. While I'm sure that's true.. I really don't think the sunroof is plexi--I tried keying it a little, it didn't really scratch..

Anyone 100% sure it's not, I'd like to have it tinted this weekend.
Thanks

Sounds like you need a new window tinter. The dealer is willing to tint the sunroof and you can bet if MINI sunroofs were exploding, it'd be all over NAM!! (like chunks of broken glass scattered all over your seats) There has to be someone around there who has worked on MINI's. Is there a local club you can ask for a reference? That idiot deserves to lose your business.

My dealer (Mini of North Scottsdale) said they would not tint the sunroof because it could crack. Sounded fishy to me.

Had my sunroof tinted at the dealer. My SA cautioned me that they had heard of sunroofs shattering from being tinted, but they had never seen one. They went ahead and tinted it, and no problems so far . . .

I found these links on a BMW forum. It is an '03 MINI.

There are lots of stories about the exploding sunroof for many makes and models of vehicles. Most people say the dealer refuses to fix it as a warranty issue and says the glass must have been damaged or struck by an object. Most people say their sunroof looks like it exploded from the inside out and they don't think anything hit it. A lot of them mention hot weather, but some say it was 70's or so. I think if you look at the huge number of sunroofs out there, there is a small chance of this happening. I would suspect that it is a defect in the glass or a scratch. Scratched glass is weak. I don't really see how tinting it is going to make a big difference.

I had the dealer tint it to possibly help in the case of breakage. I discussed it with their people first. They had all had their car's sunroofs tinted, for what it's worth (probably nothing).

Internal tint is different from factory roof graphics!

Some thermal windows absolutely require that you tint them on the outside to prevent them from shattering. These are usually the gas filled types of windows with metallic films inside. The factory roof graphics would be applied to the outside ..... so that should be OK. Can the tint be applied to the outside to be safe?
