Hi Folks,

What should I know about if I have 17" wheels but want to put on 16's for the winter (obviously I'd be getting different rims and tires)? Should this be hassle free?

Yep, hassle free. If you do it yourself you will need a decent floor jack, jack stands and a decent torque wrench. Oh and a place to store the summer wheels.

 

I change mine every spring/fall...
I was looking for 16s, but found a nice set of 17s already with winter threads for a great price... the drawback is 17" tires cost more than 16s...

 

Discuss the handling differences in snow for 16 vs 17" for the OP.

 

For snow you want the narrowest tire you can get with the nobbiest tire. Mini's stock Snow tire is a 175 i belive. 16" will let you run a 195, this will allow you to cut into the snow better and get more traction...same with water and slush.

For ICE it does not really matter. But it matters if you have ice grooves on the tire or not.

Snow tires are softer then summers and obvioulsy handle worse due to the soft side walls, 17" probably would handle better cause of the lower profile. No water what Wintertires have large thread depts and are verys soft so they do not like heat, also they vulcanise when driven over 5 degree celcius.

 

What does MINI of Canada recommend? Your choice of snows??

 

i have been waiting to hear from my dealer on the winter tire/rim packages that will be coming out. as of yet, they do not have pricing or information on the available packages.. I will have the 16" runflats and was thinking of the 15" for winter (non runflats)

I'm not sure. I'm looking at the Dunlop Winter Sport M3 but I'd like to see what Mini comes up with for packages.

I haven't got it yet. It should be here soon though as it left the UK over a week ago. Let me know if you hear about the winter packages if at all possible. Thanks!
