Road Trip
Road Trip
I will be taking a road trip in the next few weeks with a room mate of mine. I have a GPS in my laptop and here is the plan we will be taking our trip over a few weeks. Here is the plan (follow the Yellow Brick Road):

Is there any thing I should bring along, besides the normal safety stuff? I have AAA and I'm pretty mechanically inclined.
Thanks!

Bring along your Interstate Highway Bingo, your Motoring Messaging Kit, and your Motoring Logbook.
Keep some food and drink in the car, for you know not when the urge may strike and you may be well between stops. Hard cash is good to have on hand just in case. Maybe car chargers for the GPS, laptop and cell phone(s)?

Food and drink will be covered.... no need for car chargers... (built in inverter
)

Thats just the shortest distance from CO to MI, I can't help that
I WAS JUST KIDDING, NO HARM INTENDED (some times things get taken out of context around here)

Looks like an awsome drive have fun. Take lots of pics(of the MINI of course). Check out a local Truck Stop for a Pocket truck stop guide. They are laid out by interstate and in exit order. Makes it easy to find a stop fast if you need gas, restroom or supplies. JUST DONT EAT THERE!
Looks like a cool trip! I would pack some extra water just in case you overheat in west Texas-being prepared usually makes sure it doesn't happen-some emergency cash and of course clean underwear!
I'm guessing but is that about 2500 miles?

Its aprox 5625.7 mi roundtrip. I'm leaving south florida on the 18th of this month. I have no idea when I will be in the NM area, I would guess around the 21 or 22.
For the water, It's distilled right? And what about the Watter Wetter(sp?)?
Thanks for the tip about the truck stops!!!!

Smaller roads. Blue highways. There are so many good ones. If you were on the purple route, I'd advise you to take NM 104 from Las Vegas to Tucumcari rather than 285 from Santa Fe to Clines corner. Thats the way I go when I head East on the Interstates. When I did a recent trip through Arizona to Las Vegas I got some local road advice from 89AKurt . . . it may have taken a bit longer than the interstate but what a great day of driving!
WOW, that looks like FUN. If you haven't left yet, I can recommend a side trip, just east of Baton Rouge. From I-12, exit 32, south to Springfield on 43, then south to Maurepas on 22, continue down to Head Of Island, then right on 16, which will take you back up to I-12. Beautiful bayou country, curvy roads - the bikers love it.
Come on everybody, tell these guys about your favorite roads.

Thanks guys!! I will look into the side roads and side trips but I'm taking along a roommate of mine and he doesn't like theidea of michigan and ohio ( but its MY Mini)
On your way home try not to be in Atlanta at6:00AM to 10:00AM or 4:00PM to 7:00PM. It's also better to stay on I-75 thru Atlanta than to take the by-pass East or West. Good luck have fun and be careful out there!!!

Going through Nebraska = best part of your drive... make sure you plan a stop in Alliance to see Carhenge!
I'm planning a road trip for August from Minnesota to Philly to Pensacola, with a stop at the Dragon (for my first time!). Your trip is making me antsy to start!

Hey Blue, following my rcommendation on NM 104 I took another alternative today (heading toward SE NM). Rt 3 took about 15 or 20 minutes longer than the normal straight US 285 from I-40 to Santa Fe (104 is faster from Tucumcari to Santa Fe . . . at least at MINI speed).
Rt 3 is pretty cool and pure New Mexico. None of the dressed up for the tourist stuff. Villages along the Pecos River, adobe churches, roadside shrines . . . no art galleries but plenty of junk cars ready for errosion control duty. Oh, and lots of tight turns as you get north, strightaways in the south. Can't go too fast on the twisties though because the valley has lots of people and wildlife and pets (not like LA . . . by lots I mean several hundred total population. . . just a few here and there standing in the road chatting with thier neighbors).

Wow, what a cool looking road trip! I like the yellow route, hope that's the one you do take! If you do have to do the purple route, watch out for all the semi-trucks on I-40 from Okahoma to Albuquerque! That's a horrible drive...semi, after semi, after semi....the last time I did it I was in a pickup truck (before the MINI arrived) and still felt small and somewhat intimidated by them.
Have fun!
