Just curious how many non-runflat replacemnt tires are out there?

At 3 weeks and 2000 miles I picked up a nail in the shoulder of my right rear tire, Goodyear Eagle RSA's. Obviously it can't be repaired so I'm faced with a a replacement tire the runs around $270 bucks. For that price I've decided to just put four new non-runflats and try to sell the remaining 3 runflats. I'm getting 215/40-17 Yokohama AVS Sports and now have a compressor in the trunk.

Let us know how you like them.

I'm definately going non-runflat when I wear these out.
I have an 02/02 MINI Cooper 5-speed, so I have a spare
tire also.

Sorry to hear about your luck. But it will be for the nest that you switch the tires anyways. Those are hard to fix. Most times they will need to be replaced, and as you found out, are pretty pricey to go that route. Not only that, but the runflats are definite heavy weights. I have the Yoko Parada Spec2 tires. The AVS Sports are supossed to be pretty good as well. Hope you have better luck with them.
Cheers,

I imagine the non rum flats ride better too? Any feedback on that?

And if you get a flat you can't fill, you just get flat bedded?

If the ride improves and the handling remains sharp (lighter weight has to be better) I want to go this route.

Thanks.

There are good and bad things about the runflats. I have the pirellis with S-lite 17" rims.
The runflats are:
Expensive- $163 or more per tire on the internet and too much for retail.
Very gripy- handles corners very well but not as good as a track tire.
Noisy- slightly noisy but not as noisy as a track tire (Falken Azenis Sport)
Harsh ride- much worse than non runflats on rough roads. On smooth roads they are fine.
Trams on freeway- very noticable when on concrete freeways with lines built in, affects the steering of the car in a negative way.
Heavy- maybe a pound heavier for the Pirellis and a lot worse for the goodyears.
Snow use- NO Way

The non runflats are:
Cheaper for the same size tire, Yokohama AVS ES 100 about $93
Easier to find replacements
Gripy but not quite as good unless you get track tires
Less noisy unless you get track tires
Smoother ride- most of the time
Tramming- minimal
Not as heavy- weight vary some with the tire size but a little can be saved
Snow use- usually good depends on the tire

I am running the Yokohama Parada Spec 2's as well. The Dunlop runflats were absolutely horrendous in the snow, had one accident and easily hydroplaned in the rain. The Yoko's are stickier, quieter and smoother. Keep in mind that my car has been lowered and I went from 16 to 17 inch wheels. The difference is night and day. I know a few MCS owners that have ditched the runflats and take their chances. I have a regular Cooper with the spare, so it's not as bad. I will be putting Blizzaks on my 16's next winter, that's for sure.

Unless I go on a road trip, I don't bother with the compressor or can of flat fixer. That's where roadside assistance comes in. And I know enough people around town here that would help me out if I were stranded around town with a flat. I'm taking my chances, but oh well.
My opinion on tires in general is this. All season tires aren't that great. They try to be two things at once. They're OK for a general use tire. But if you want the least bit of performance out of a tire, a more well performance tire would be good. On the flip side for winter, buying a winter tire is better than all seasons, because it's season specific. All seasons don't provide much performnce, or in the way of a secure winter tire. Buying appropriate tires for those two drastic weather changes is usually the best, if you really like to drive your car that is.
Cheers,

I don't even have my car yet, but I do know once my tires are worn out, I'll change to non-run-flats. The run-flats are a great idea, but too expensive right now. You have to consider a $75+ increase on each tire. I'm getting the cooper so it has a spare and that's enough for me.

Sure is obvious that folks with the Cooper have more options because of the spare.

If I had a Cooper and used it as a first car, I would definitely opt for Blizzaks in the winter.
