993 vs. MCS on track

My buddy sent this to me from his 993 message boards. It show an incar view from a 993 duking it out with a MCS. Although they both made some mistakes on track it's still amazing that the MCS kept it together.

Note how once the MCS gets around the 993, they both pull the 3-series back into view.

the guy driving the Mini was more smooth. The Porche driver is awful twitchy! He also goes in to early into the turns, and has to loose more speed to do so. Once he follows the Mini, it helps him with the line, and he goes faster.
I gotta say some of the best lessons out there is to follow a better driver around a track. You learn a lot!

bk, dont start that again. It has a 1.6litre MINI engine. nuff said. It's still a MINI. You need more faith in these cars, someone who knows their MINI stuff needs to take you on the track.

dont worry I have plenty of track time, not only with a MINI.

How do you know it still has the 1.6? i've seen guys drop 3.2 M engines in a Mini. I guess the sound makes it lean towards the 1.6 though... and man that particular setup sounds like crap! It sounds like it's gonna last a week.

I'm not starting anything. Having, alot of racing experiance, I can say that for an MCS to pass a 993 (even with a mediocre driver), it has to be greatly modified. There must be easily 10-15K in that car.

Nice video, being that I don't race I did notice the mistakes they both made.

Nice video.

I have never seen someone in the wrong gear exiting a corner as much as the Porsche driver. Even the MINI driver was having a hard time figuring out which cog to use.

The 993 driver should be called "early apex". The MINI driver was a little off line too. I thought for a second that the 993 driver was waiting because he was faster in the straights but he seem to lose too much speed coming out of the corners to pass the MINI. So scratch that thought. And I thought he was pressing the MINI driver hoping to get him to make a mistake and the MINI driver went into the dirt at least once. But that's a pro strategy and these guys don't drive like pros.

Anyway, I guess I watch the racing on TV way too much.

Nice video. I just had a power outtage here and lost the post I was working on.

If you're looking for the MCS footage--fast forward about half way through the clip around 8:50. The 993 almost bites it at 11:33. Somewhere after that the MCS goes off the track slightly kicking up dirt.

Cool video. Good driving by the MINI guy. It did look like the Porsche guy was turning too soon and scrubbing speed while running wide. I doubt that he was playing with MINI. He seemed to be trying too hard to stay in front and the MINI guy had to put the move on him underbraking. The Porsche guy should have just let the MINI guy pass. Notice that they catch the BMW with the MINI in front, but it lost the Porsche guy before that. It seems the Porsche guy was holding up the MINI. The MINI seemed like a track prepared MCS. I have seen quite a few of them and they go pretty nicely. A stock MCS doesn't stand a chance against a 993 though.

Sweet vid. I agree that it seemed that the 993 driver seemed tentative throughout the race but gained some confidence on the lines when the MINI appeared.

It was real fun to watch though...made me want to get out there. I guess I'll be going to Streets this Saturday.

ok a couple of comments from someone that was there ....i had dinner and talked with the mini guys who are out of batan rouge la they said they had 220 at the wheel...the mini was set up ..if you noticed the p-car guy was looking in his rear view the whole first half of the video...why because the mini was on his a$$ from the get go...the e36 m3 was miles ahead but was over heating so he backed off just enough to stay slightly in front ...neither car reeled him in ....it was very rewarding for me and the other mini divers at the event ...especially for me... this was a lsc bmw de/club race with mostly pca instructors, safety and grid personnel working... i was instructing for the de and at grid during the race ...lots of interesting comments...all positive from the porsche gang....no mini bashing....IMHO the race line is a line completely different from the de line (pca, bmw or whoever)

I don't think he thought the mini was any real competition and was half asleep just enjoying the drive. There are several openings on the inside.....the Mini was fighting for his life. I really think he could have left him if he wanted........

Always fun to arm chair quarter back.

Having been at that this BMW DE/Race event as an instructor and knowing both drivers my opinion greatly differs from most. MiniD1 has it right.

What you were watching was racing at is best and both drivers are some of the best folks you could meet.

Thanks for the Video, it had me leaning in my chair. I'm going to show it to my wife. She likes roller coasters but I have never been able to explain to her what track time is. This will help her understand why I need to go more often.

that is a nice video, although booth drivers are not proffesionals, still enjoyable experience.

MINId1 & TXMinee. Thanks for chiming in. It is always good to have a little clarity from folks that were actually at the event. Great video.

I think I and everyone else would love to know how much money that guy has spent modding his MINI.
