A MINI amongst a sunset (new pic I took)
You are welcome to tweak the images, knock yourself out.
No Tripod? #1 talk to Santa he can find them for as little as $10 #2 rocks, fences, benches, the ground, trees, old cars, see where I'm going with this?
I've used them all. Once I get my Card reader working I'll actually have a few of my own with a MINI in them.
89AKurt, do you have CS2 or newer with HDR processing? Your sunsets are gorgeous but the problem is that shooting into the sun that leaves the car in silhouette. If you have software that will do HDR, set up your tripod, and take 8-10 shots varying the exposure time such that they range from the car being well lit (sky overexposed) to the car almost invisible (and the sky perfect). Keep the aperature unchanged throughout to maintain the same depth of field. Then run them through an HDR processor and it not only gives you a more balanced exposure but the dynamic range is dramatically increased. WIsh I had my MINI in this but here is an example. The log in front was in deep shadow; HDR pulled it out. Otherwise the sky would wash out.

Don't get me wrong, your shot are great. Keep 'em coming!

Hey Motor On, the story behind this picture is that I captured a sunset with my MINI a whole day after you did.

Didn't use the flash because Swifty hasn't been washed for awhile, and another storm is due this weekend.
I sent 2 other shots to speednut hoping he could save them.
And the obligatory sunset only shot:

Thank you!
I got your back, no worries. Glad to see someone found his tripod.
So this is a further elaboration on what SIN Mini and I've been telling Kurt. I'm going to retract my prior instructions and ask Kurt next time for 3 different exposures to capture the: shadows; mid-tones; and highlights (e.g. rear quarter panel in the shadows; bushes and grass; sunset sky)
This first photo did not have enough exposure latitude between the two exposures Kurt gave me (looked like only a 1 stop difference), so I just played with the lighter version. If the sky looks a little funny, it's because there were 7 power lines stretched across from the left to right sides of the photo (killed my 5 minute edit time limit
). Nowhere to park across the street Kurt?

Here's the 2 exposures of the next photo Kurt sent to me before any darkroom stuff was done:

Here's the blend of the two images using a luminosity mask that was tweaked. PS CS3 "Auto-Blend" just laughed at me when I tried the "easy" button.

This almost looks like the sort of photo that our favorite Pug withholder Dave B. gets in a single exposure.

Thanks for posting already Dave!
I asked the power company if they would bury the powerline. They asked if I had a quarter million bucks.
Gimme a break, I just figured out the manual setting function on the camera.
I should use the mondo tripod (if I can find it) from my video days, just looks funny with the tiny camera on it.

Strange, my magic 8-ball just said "Don't put off things to be done today"
However its next response was "STFU and get your nose out of other people's business". I think I'll heed the later.
Back on topic; any new sunsets Kurt, or is that fresh white stuff there cramping your style?

Got myself a new DSLR recently, my first one ever, an Olympus e-500, which i am in love with. This picture needs to be touched up in PS (headlight glare, making the scoop light more uniform, both of which I need to figure out HOW to do) but think it came out pretty well for having only been using the camera since the beginning of December.

Obviously a ton of room for improvement, but hey I am 17 and I have only just started trying to get creative with my photography.

Some Guy: Welcome to the Sunset thread! Thanks for posting your first attempt. May I suggest not so much ground, and get closer to your car. I dig the light mods.
We are getting some sort of storm soon, hope to take some pictures.

Tried a new location the other night. Also tried bracketing to accomplish an HDR picture. speednut Photochomped it.

Too bad this spot is crowded with old funky homes and barking dog.

1) If possible, bracket using varying shutter speed rather than aperture (keeps depth of field constant)
2) I usually take 3-5 shots (one metered for the scene, 2 at longer shutters, 2 at shorter shuuters. May be overkill but I do this in manual...all I do is roll the shutter wheel a couple of clicks, shoot, roll again, shoot, ...but your's looks pretty good...I may try that some time for grins.
(I would have photochomped that limb out of the pic on the right edge or cropped it in a bit)
