I've used a Sony "night vision" camera with the IR illumination and minimal available light intensification, and been underwhelmed. I've researched FLIR technology to death, but haven't ever found justification for the cost incurred, as it would still be higher than my deductible for a deer slaying, which would be my primary goal of the system spotting the animals on the side of the road, that aren't reflecting eye light or tucked behind the bushes.

I was hoping something was available that was reasonably priced. Rip a night vision camera out of a wrecked Caddie, maybe? The IR cameras I would think would not "see" far enough.

If I am not mistaken, an IR camera has IR LEDs around the camera that project the IR "light" then it reflects off of objects back to the camera to see them in the dark. In a way it is invisible light...if that makes sense. As opposed to most night vision cameras/goggles that amplify the light tremendously.

If you think about pilots that use night vision goggles (i.e. helicopter pilots) they don't have lights in front of them so for those goggles to be effective you need minimal light. When this is applied to driving, that means you must keep you lights off. Sounds safe

Technology and cost haven't met yet. I've thought about this before for driving, but it may be some time before we see some sort of technology that would work for driving.

I did not know that! I would personally just save the money...

I guess it would work on the same principal as night vision goggles.
