I'm having fun with it.

I'm actually debating between the D3100 and D5100. Where did you get yours at? What do you think of it?

I got it from B&H Photo. The D5100 had not come out yet, but I think
if it had, I probably would still have gotten the D3100.

From what I can gather, the D5100 has:

200 more dollar bills inside it (not removable)
4 oz. heavier
16.2 MP instead of 14.2
1 slightly better movie resolution mode
several additional point and shoot modes
bracketing
better LCD resolution
HDR function
(neither D3100 nor D5100 have flash command function)

I like the camera.
A major step up from borrowing my wife's Canon point and shoot.
I'm still not shooting pics as much as I was 10 or 20 years ago, but have
taken it to gardens, a vacation, and got some nice portraits of our kitties.
I've been eyeing an ultra-wide like the Nikon 10-20 3.5-4.5, or the Sigma 8-16 or 10-20 4-5.6,
but I think they're just too expensive for the limited use they'd get.
The faster Sigma 10-20 3.5, and the Tamron 10-24 and Tokina 11-16 are not good enough to consider.

Thanks for the comparison!

Definitely sounds like the D3100 does the trick!

I just upgraded from a Nikon D50 to a D7000, and I can't believe what a difference five years makes in digital cameras!

Canon t2i! Awesome camera, especially fun with the different firmwares available from magiclantern. Hipstamatic features on a DSLR is fun as hell!

Been shooting with my 17-85mm lately, great overall lens.

Has anyone attempted making a steadicam for shooting video??

Wow, since so many use big cameras, thought I would get this.

I Have been using Canon Equipment for over 30 yearsm starting with a TL 1 right through the T90 and then the rebel series, about a month ago I sold off all the canon digital stuff and started to buy Nikon, picked up the D5100 and a few lens, so far I am very happy with the switch. I fond the Nikon the function control are easier to work with, but I am sure others will disagree

I agree. To illustrate the point - these two photos taken with my iPhone because it's what I had with me. (The second is a panorama of several iPhone shots.)

I use an iPhone and a Canon 5D Mark II. I have both cameras with me most of the time, but the iPhone is great for the quick shot when I can't dig out the 5D. Here's a recent shot with my iPhone:

Here's one with the 5D:

That sunset in the mirror shot needs to go to the MINI sunset thread.

What app did you use to process the second shot? (Snapseed?)

Okay, might as well jump in the fray with this one. Here's an old one I snapped off with an iPhone.

Nikon D90 with Nikon 18-200mm VR II 3.5-5.6, Nikon 50mm 1.8, Tokina 11-16 2.8.

I also agree with others, the best camera is what you have.

Photos taken with my iphone 3GS, used free or cheap (think $1.99) photo apps for enhancements.

I decided that digital seems to be here for a long while... So I retired my Nikon film hardware (which is good since I can't remember where each component is). Hense I picked up the Canon 5D MkII, and 4 EF L lenses to start with.... Wait, it's not over... I also just moved over to the darkside and purchased an 27" iMac to start working with. Just a huge step for a Windows Network Engineer!

And Loving it!

I'd say no, but that would be lying . It's a pretty touchy subject with the current situation, economy, public's perceptions and opinions.

Just asked because my wife has been a PTF here in Southern California for several years now.

Tutor Needed...

I didn't know where else to post this, so here goes...Ok guys I know this is going to sound stupid, but ya' know what I don't care...flame me if you will!!

I have a Nikon D200...I really need to learn how to use it, I've had it for over 4 yrs. now and have taken less than 200 pics., the camera I admit is way to advanced for me, but I always buy the best I can afford at the time and unfortunately am in way over my head with this.

I'm looking for someone in the Vancouver/PDX area to help me understand this camera because I really don't want to get rid of it. I'm not a novice photographer, although with this camera I certainly am. I've been taking pictures since I was in High School on our High School Yearbook Staff and taking photography classes.

I started out with a Pentax Film Camera and then went right into this one, which I admit was not a good idea.

I'm just hoping someone might want to help another MINIac out, if not, oh well.

Thanks for your time.

A few suggestions:

1) Use it. Carry it with you and take photos of whatever. Digital is cheap, and you get instant feedback.

2) Don't use Auto mode, or Program, or whatever it is called on the Nikon. Use shutter priority or aperture priority. Everything you learned about exposure, framing, etc on the Pentax will transfer to the Nikon. A digital SLR is just like a film SLR, but you get to change the film speed at any time rather than having to put a different roll of film in the camera.

3) Look at a lot of photography. Flickr, 500px.com, google plus, whatever.

4) Sign up for a 52 (one photo a week) or 365 (one photo a day) project. Having a goal will help motivate you to get out and shoot.

5) Find a user group in your area. Flickr is great for this. Check meet up.com as well.

6) Have fun!

You can find me lurking around Flickr, 500px, and G+. Drop me a line if you have any questions.
