Guys/Gals: best way to sell car?

No, I am not selling the Mini! We are considering selling our Prius but I have no idea what is the most effective means. Since I would likely sell to someone local, what about columbuscars.com? Or, is something else better? By the way, this would be a great Prius for someone: every Prius option including Navigation, it has 3.5 years and 50K miles left on full extended Toyota warranty, winter tires on OEM rims, 17" summer tires on aftermarket, all eight tires have almost full tread, synthetic oil only, rustproofed, three sets of mats (winter, sisal and OEM), never hit, RejeX coating twice/year, best looking Prius around with summer rims. Oh, and driven by an old lady (Siverback spouse!). Sorry, this if off topic but I trust the opinions of my Mini friends! Andy

First step has to be go to Carmax. They will give you a quote that is good for a month. Then post it for $1,000 more than Carmax will give you. If someone bites then great if not then at the end of the month go back to Carmax and collect your check. We sold Jill's Protege to them, because their offer was $500 more than we thought we could gte for it. Very easy process inspection took about 45 minutes and the sale part took about 30 minutes, and they hand you a check!

I found my MINI on Yahoo Autos. Looks like Yahoo says "listing by cars.com".
I don't know anything else about it, but I could search specifically for a MINI in a geographical range with photos, specs, etc. -- everything I needed to contact the seller.

Andy do go to Carmax for a quote. Then post it on Craigslist & possibly Auto Trader.com.

Now what will be replacing the Prius? A new Ultralite?

Craigslist. Autotrader is usually a waste of money.

I also went to Micheals Crafts and got 2" white letters...wrote "FOR SALE"
then with 1" ones put my number undeneath that... Got a few calls as its on the outside and easy to read...also a lot classier than a big ugly orange "FOR SALE"

Thanks for the suggestions. I feel like with the extras like the extended warranty and the second set of wheels/tires, I need to sell it myself because no way CarMax can offer anything for them (the warranty is not transferrable to them). A salesman at Roush Honda said get the Kelly Blue Book trade-in value and add $1,500 to $2,000, plus I guess whatever I can get from the other stuff.

Chuck, we looked at a Honda Fit. The Prius is incredibly practical with great space utilization and obviously, awesome fuel economy, plus it has not had one issue. But for us it is a large car and not fun. So, while it has a good value, I thought about selling. When we bought it January 2, 2006, the government paid us $3,150 to buy it! I would love a Clubman but there is a significant cost differential compared to the Fit and the mileage is not as good. I have no idea if MAG is discounting Minis these days.

I love the Honda Fit. A fun practical little car. The mileage isn't bad, but no other car is going to get the mileage of your Prius. I wonder if those winter tires & wheels you have would fit a Fit?

No idea either if MAG would diccout a Clubby. Best go over & find out. I think a Fit is going to be much cheaper than the Clubby.

Last night we saw an old Fit and a new Fit and I think I like the old one better. Both are great cars.

Also the Prius does not really do that great on the highway there are a number of cars that get better mileage if you do most of your driving on highways. Plus when you look at the whole manufacturing process it is not even close to the greenest vehicle availible.

Saddly marketing and reality are not the same thing anymore, so Toyota can put babbies in flower costumes in their commercials and everybody starts thinking buying a Toyota will cause the world to become a utopia of some kind.

One more comment then I will stop ranting on Priuses. The 4th generation of a system does not nessecarily make it any better, look at Microsoft. Toyota has been taking swipes at GM for this lately, I just hope the Volt comes out and is a success so GM can say flip your 4th gen crap we got the next big thing already.

Yours truly,
Allen aka "the Toyota Disliker"

Allen: swipe away! You'll get no complaints from me. However, economically speaking, the Prius has been a great deal for us - I think Consumer Reports has it as the cheapest car to own. I assume this is a combination of reliability (it seems bulletproof), resale value and fuel economy (we've saved over $3K in fuel versus the WRX my wife was driving before). On top of that our ridiculous government paid me over $3K to buy the thing! And, this will be a great car for someone who doesn't much care for cars as a means of enjoyment.

The Fit is perhaps the best bang for the buck out there. I really enjoyed driving it, although I'm not sure about long trips at 75 mph. I know my wife would love a Clubman but it is a significant premium.
