JCW - Resonator = what exhaust?

This is currently my setup, the JCW Exhaust minus the resonator. My only issue with this setup is the loud snapping. I love the tone of the exhaust at idle and the tone under acceleration and cruising speeds. But that blasted snapping is getting to me.

I've been listening to the samples of the exhausts on the main exhaust post (...again), but I need some help identifying the exhaust that sounds like the JCW - Resonator setup, without the bloody snapping. Unfortunately, if I can't find a setup that sounds like that, then I'll have to put the resonator back on...and those would be dark days .

So, has anyone done the resonatorectomy on the JCW and then switched to another exhaust? Or has anyone heard it before and was able to make a connection between another exhaust sound and this setup? Or maybe someone knows how to stop the bloody snapping!?!?

Help me .

are you talking about the "popping" when you let off the throttle? sounds like it has gotten way too loud for you, if i am reading this right...

Sorry, let me specify.

Popping, or burbbling = This is what I get when I let off the accelerator. There is a lot of this and I like it! .

Snapping - This happens on a hard let off of the accelerator. It literally SNAPS!

The burbbling or popping can be as loud as it wants, but the snapping takes away from the "class" of the Mini. I want a tone similar to the JCW - resonator without that snapping. Burbbling is good!

Alta Sportone

I'm thinking that the Alta Sportone sounds very similar to the JCW exhaust without the resonator, but I'm not completely sure.

Does anyone on Long Island (NY) have the Alta Sportone installed on their MCS? If so, I'd like to meet up with you one day at your convenience, so I could possibly listen to it. I don't mind driving and I make regular out to the east end, so please PM me if you'd be willing to setup a meeting one day. I promise, I won't take up much of your time.

Thanks!

It's posts like yours that keep me from doing the resonatorectomy.

I'm interested in what you find out. And kind of waiting for the (expected to be glorious) WMS exhaust now that M7 is no longer doing exhausts.

it's just the nature of such a project imo. Im the complete opposite of you, I went to a prototype webb setup without resonator and my car will literally backfire, but it's not a snap it sounds more like classic british sports cars which is sorta cool. I dunno if I were to go quieter i'd get a milltek, but im not going that route, i don't believe the milltek snaps, it's still more of a burble imo.

Talk to peter from www.myminiparts.com - he has a replacement pipe so you can remove the resonator. He would know if this is a generic problem or if its specific to you.

I know what you mean, I ran like that for a while. I kinda liked it but it didnt exactly "fit" the mini haha

Can you make a recording of the "snapping" sound??

I'm not sure what that is.

lift your car, unbolt the exhaust behind the resonator, rev up and let off and you'll see. its more of a backfire really. idk.. if I had something to record with i'd do it tomorrow :/

I thought it did that due to not having any backpressure?

Same here, no snapping just a real nice sound. With some easy listening burble and pop.

My guess is that his a unique install problem. I think a trip to MIDAS is in order.

I just spoke with Peter from www.myminiparts.com.

I asked him about the "snapping" and he said it's normal. Basically because of the way the car is programmed, if I pull my foot off the gas quickly, the computer cuts off the fuel immediately, which causes the snapping. However, if I ease off the gas gently, there is more burbbling and less of the snapping.

So there aren't any problems with the exhaust, just a problem with my ears and trying to convey that sound in text to all of you.

I can tell you one thing, there isn't really a way for me to record the sound that it makes, unless I invent a boom that extends behind the car and is completely resistant to wind noise. I can rev the engine at stand still and never hear that "snapping" noise. But once I start moving along, the noise is prominent once I let off the accelerator quickly and not so much when I let it off gently.

it use to happen the most getting off the high way downshifting to 4th. it never failed to pop. if you run up in 1st gear and let off it will do it too.

That's exactly when I hear it the most, too!

Let me ask you a quick question. On aftermarket exhausts, say Alta or Milltek or Magna, will that same noise still be there?

My magnaflow doesnt pop at all, has slight burbling and isnt quite as loud but its a tad bit deeper. I was definatly pleased. I sometimes miss the pops though

I just want an exhaust that has the same tone as I have now but without the popping . A LITTLE louder wouldn't be bad, but does anyone know if the Alta or Milltek sound this way, without the popping?

Did I make any sense?!

Yeah, but I can't really make a good decision. I need to hear them in person. I actually didn't like the Borla Sport, I heard that one in person and wasn't impressed.
