I am thinking of doing the same thing. I have access to wholesale fabric and am trying to get some Alcantara for this very reason. I have seen some custom wrapped wheels and they look great. I have a feeling that you could just cover the existing wheel with the new fabric and it would be about the same thickness as the JCW one.

Good luck !

The way I went about making the wheel like the JCW wheel thickness is I bought a Wheel skin cover in black leather perferated all around. Really nicely made. I got it for Christmas but a friend of mine has one and my wife grab a hold of his wheel and said "Looks great but to big for MY hands". The Wheel skin is now for sale on the market place if anyone has thought about going about making there steering wheel much like the JCW wheel and want a great deal on one. The Wheel skin is for a three spoke wheel.

My electrical issues turned out to be unrelated to my steering wheel replacement. Took it into the dealer and they finally called me this morning with the diagnosis. The previous owner had installed an aftermarket windshield and it was leaking on both the driver and passenger side. It had shorted out the BC1 computer. So, now I'm having to replace both the computer and the windshield - to the tune of $1500. Ouch. There goes my mod budget :(

Could a 2005-2006 steering wheel like the JCW one be retrofitted to fit a 2002 model MCS?

Anyone in the San Francisco Bay Area have the JCW steering wheel (preferably with Alcantara) and wouldn't mind letting me feel how it compares to the OEM steering wheel? I am located in Pleasanton. I'll buy you your choice of coffee or beer. Thanks!

I have an all-leather if you don't find someone with Alcantara. I'm in Menlo Park a couple of times a week.

I appreciate the offer, rkw! I'd still prefer to touch and feel the Alcantara version, but I will definitely keep you in mind.

it's feels exactly like suede that has better grip and breathes better. I touched one in a buddies car and knew i had to have it right away. Noticable improvement mostly because of thickness but the alcantra is awesome.

Sorry if this was covered earlier and I missed it, but....
I really want to get the Alcantara wheel....I've got Morristown's website open in another window, but haven't brought myself to actually purchase it yet. The one thing I'm concerned about is how well the Alcantara will wear under normal usage. Has anyone had any problems with this? And is it covered by any sort of warranty?

I came very close to buying a used Alcantara wheel but after I saw two used bmw 330I's with the FULL Alcantara steering wheel at a dealer,I chose not to buy it. Both wheels on the bmw's looked as if they were shedding, almost as if a cat had used it for a scratching post lol. A person would want a waranty for sure If started having issues with the Alcantara. I really love the look and feel of the Alcantara JCW wheel. It still hurts me to have let that deal go .

The JCW is not full alcantara and has leather at the most frequent hand positions, so that will help with wear. However, over time the alcantara will still eventually show signs of wear (become smooth and shiny at places, as you would expect with suede). I like the feel of alcantara but because of this reason I chose the all-leather. The all-leather JCW is still a big step up from the stock wheel.

So anyone with the older 2-spoke convert to this JCW 3-spoker yet ? Im curious what parts are needed, besides the wheel airbag and switch panels for the spokes. Maybe a new horn ring too ???

I panicked when I saw that Morristown MINI's sale ended on their website (the JCW steering wheel is now back to their normal discounted price of $468) and pulled the trigger on the Alcantara one from their eBay store (which was still at $390 shipped).

With the rave reviews here and on Motoringfile, my expectations may be excessively high. Y'all will hear from me if I am disappointed.

Air Bag?

Not sure anyone has considered this but since I have the two spoke, I am thinking about not buying the expensive airbag for the three spoke (Schroth should keep me in place well enough)...would this approach require a 3ohm resistor similar to a seat change?

Also, just how expensive is this airbag?

Thanks,
Sid

If you don't mind how it looks, the steering wheel would be like this without an airbag (plus any spoke covers you add):

The accessories catalog lists the airbag at $380 MSRP.

Well you can always skip the airbag and get only the cover? Then add the resister to turn off the light.

Can you just buy the cover? I thought they were sold as a single unit?
