2020 JCW manual transmission info This Monday
I sat at the dealer near me for a while today. They searched for a good version of a 2 door S or any JCW from 2019. The JCW was not to be found near NY, a few regular S's were found.
I am talking only about manual. No interest in DCT or automatic etc.
During the day, many calls made to configure the 2020's. They were told that this monday, 17th of august, they will know if they can order Manual transmission hardtop 2 door S and manual JCW. Now, this is not to order them starting this Monday, this is to find out if they will ever have them again, and a confirmation of build time and dates.
What a lame company if they dont allow them to be ordered.

Not sure which model you're looking into, but here's what was announced previously:

I was told by a dealer today that "The new 2020's are all automatic transmissions that have been upgraded to become a dual clutch which is supposed to be much quicker, smoother and efficient than a regular automatic."
I am not sure if he was referring to only the Cooper S that I was asking about or if it applies to all 2020 MINIs.
I am in the market for a new daily driver. While I prefer a manual for a weekend car, I would rather have an automatic as a daily driver. I would not, however, buy a MINI with a new transmission that has not been on the market for a few years. I have also heard enough issues with dual clutch transmissions in stop-and-go rush hour traffic as well as issues with BMW dual clutch transmissions.
I was thinking about buying the last of the third generation JCW in classic trim with a manual transmission at the end of the 2020 model year, however, it looks like that may not be possible.

I have a 2020 JCW with the DCT that I ordered and finally took delivery of last week. This is a transmission that has been in BMW for a while so it's not anything that hasn't been tested and I remember the Dual Clutch coming out in the 2006 VW GTI, so the design has been around for a bit. Oh, it is smooth...very smooth by the way. I can't wait till it's broken in to see just how well it does.
I have ordered a 2020 JCW and from what I understand and have read, the transmission in the 20 JCW is not a DCT but an 8 speed auto that was lifted from existing Mini products and has been around for several years. The Cooper S gets the 7 speed DCT. I looked at the window sticker of a 2020 S and it specially stated DCT. I test drove a 20 JCW HT and the window sticker stated 8 speed sport auto transmission. YMMV and maybe someone more informed than me can refute the above.
I would have much preferred a DCT in the JCW as it suits the sporting character of the car. I have two cars with DCT and they are fantastic. The only downside is cost to maintain and repair. Why they gave one to the S and not the JCW is difficult to understand but you would think it (8 speed auto) has to benefit their highest performing model.

The reason the JCW didn't get the DCT was that it couldn't handle the power of the JCW's engine. The 2020 JCW's get the 8 speed transmission that's in Clubman and Countryman. MINI's in Europe got the DCT in 2019. The other forum had people reporting issues with them early on.
Stop Start feature and when to use
I use the Stop Start feature when the Temps are above 75F and I'm in moderate stop and go traffic. I never use it in heavy slow traffic and I'm only moving 60-100 feet at a time!!
