(Updating!) A Sad Ending for a 1 of 1 JCW...

Had this one shipped 1250 miles to get it - just this past November. 2010 factory JCW r55, British Racing Green with a special order hot chocolate lounge leather interior. Had already done a fair amount of work to it. Including lots of maintenance plus charge pipes, intercooler, manic tune, etc. Was “saving” up to post pics when it was “finished”. Saw the truck bearing down on me in the rear view going 70-80 and laid on my horn to get him to look up. He didn’t even hit the brakes until he’d hit me. Slammed the clubby into the concrete barriers, pushing them back a good three feet, put me up on two wheels and dragged me along said barriers for a good 120 feet, totaling it. Huge bummer, but my son wasn’t in the car and I’m ok (pretty sore, though!). Mini held up very well considering. Certainly reinforced my belief that minis are tough!

It was my second mini (previously an r56 s with redwood interior) and I’m in no way emotionally ready to let it go, so searching for another r55 jcw. Was thinking I might try to find an n18 jcw but there aren’t any on the market. Also considering buying mine back after it is totaled and swapping all my parts AND my interior to the new clubbie!

Man, that seriously sucks. Don't tell me -- he was on his cell phone. That's the reason I'm in a MINI and not back on a motorcycle after being run off the road numerous times then rear-ended while stopped in traffic. Hope the guy had insurance -- mine didn't.

Man, sorry to hear that, at least your still here with us, looks like it could have been a lot worse. To move the barriers like that, WOW! Tough little MINI's they are.

Aw man! I'm sorry that happened to you. Glad you're okay too, but damn, that was one pretty little MINI.

Goddamn. Def would have been worse on a bike!

and yes... do still feel fortunate, particularly that my 2 year old wasn’t in the back. Sat staring at that empty car seat for a few minutes afterwards.

I just had to post here since when many people say “it’s just a car...” they don’t quite understand. Sold my first mini because we were expecting... as soon as he was about to turn 2 and needed a front facing seat I started shopping on a limited budget. Searched for a couple months, found one in MA (I’m actually from ma but have lived in FL for years), had it shipped all the way down, and then worked on it for five months until it was *almost* “done.” Just a car to most people, but to an enthusiast it’s also countless hours of work and planning and such. Ah well... there will always be another! But this one was special for sure!

Glad your ok. Thats a rare color combo. Good luck on the search. I found a Spice Orange R55 JCW with JCW red pipping interior. That was rare.

Yeah for sure. I wouldn’t turn down a spice orange if I bumped into one! I’ll have to make the call on whether to keep the clubbie for a parts car soon... and part of the reason is for the interior. Makes searching for one a lot easier if I already have an interior for it!

Yep , i was close to buying it then I saw my used R58 JCW and jumped on it. Yep buy it back from the insurance and then swap the seats out.

Solid. Yeah I’ll prob go that route. For the seats plus all the various parts (including a bunch from ECS!). It would just be nice to find another soon enough to know for sure I want to swap the seats (if it has a unique interior already, might not be worth it quite as much).

Sorry to see such a nice and loved Clubby murdered like that. I purchased a car back from the insurance company many years ago ('79 528i) and I made lots of money on it. It was a fair amount of work, but it was fun, educational, and totally worth it.

Glad your Clubby took the physical damage and not you. Hopefully it will all work out

I was wondering about that. Seems like more money could be made parting it out. Though the big ticket items will be the engine, turbo, trans. I’d like to sell them together with the ecu if possible as it is manic tuned... and since it is a jcw, it could be a pretty huge upgrade for someone doing a build. Still haven’t found the right replacement though so who knows how long this will take!

Sad to hear that the Clubby got hit but at least nobody got killed. I am not a Bodyman but could the Clubby be repaired as long as there is no frame damage? It is hard to tell in the pictures It is cheaper for the Insurance to total it out and resell that damaged car than have it fixed. Do you know somebody that could have a look at it before you buy it back?

im sure I could have a look at it. Depending on the price, the drivetrain alone would be worth buying it back. The impact on the rear was to the barn doors, though, as his truck was much higher, and they’ve been pushed back a few inches, exposing frame behind the bumper. I doubt it would be worth fixing as the damage includes the hood, front quarter, front bumper.. Drivers door. Rear quarter, rear bumper, both rear doors, and passengers, and rear quarter. Just too many different damaged body parts to mess with, and certainly some structural questions. I’ve got a good $1500 in salvageable parts I’d be rebuying for another one anyways, though, and I’d love to keep that interior, so it will likely be worth it for me to keep it regardless, of course, depending on what kind of number they come back with.

Ed

That's a nasty accident glad you're OK. I know if it were me I'd be rubbing my neck and dragging a leg as soon as I got out of the car.

Rebuilding (sort of)

Thank you guys for the condolences. Just updating... in all of my stubbornness I decided to buy back my jcw clubbie, take the interior and my mods, and reinstall them into another 2010 jcw clubman I had shipped all the way from California (to FL)! I’ll be updating with some progress as I go. Here are some pics of the new one as well as the beginning of the swap.

Posting this as I haven’t found much info on it, but the jcw clubbie spoiler does indeed use the same mounting holes (and bolts/nuts) as the mini oem roof rails. The job wasn’t bad at all, until it came to putting the headliner back up solo. That was no fun.

Progress

Making more progress. Had already stripped the interior out of the old clubbie

and got most of it installed in the new one. Swapped the rooster red dash trim for carbon black, and while I was at it, swapped in a set of black climate controls from the facelift models. Also painted the radio to match though I left the nav dvd slot for now. Swapping in brown outer door cards and the hot chocolate seats.

Got the ecu back from Way, so the manic tune is in, as is the intercooler and Alta boost tube. Did a carbon cleaning, afe dry panel filter, colder plugs, coils, noisemaker delete, ebc redstuff pads, and ecs wheel spacers. Redline mtl, nvm torque arm insert, and turbo heat shield to come. Should be done by tomorrow am and be in top form! A couple bonuses I didn’t realize when I bought it too... brand new turbo with only 10k miles on it (factory installed), and it has the hypersport body kit, which looks great in black. “After” pics to follow soon!
