I swapped out my shifter for Cravenspeeds Adjustable short throw upgrade (full write up, review, and images to follow) and want to take the next step to upgrade the ****. The JCW **** and boot (picture below) have a long plastic collar that restricts how far you can move the shifters fulcrum point down so it’s gotta go if I want to take full advantage of the adjustability. Only thing is, because of that long collar, the boot is really short, making it incompatible with aftermarket *****. (I doesn’t look like the boot will reach the bottom of the **** without that collar.)
Has anybody swapped out this ****? How’d you get around the boot issue?
Yes, it is a two piece **** and collar.
I don’t know if this makes sense, but the collar is longer than the adjustable shifter lowers. So at the adjustable shifters lowest level, the **** is still too high up for the boot to reach without the collar.
Wow, yeah it makes sense but I just cant believe Mini would make 2 shift boot lengths. Maybe get a longer shift **** like the Billy club or something that will reduce the gap
Billy club mounts at same point, it’s just taller.
Thanks for the suggestion though.
I just ordered cravenspeed ****. Hoping it works at the lowest setting. Gonna lift the whole housing up to get it a little closer to the console.
I did the same, came out great. Used the collar that Whalen sent me and was able to use stock boot. You just need to decide what design you want the one you see below was what I designed. Pretty sweet with the adjustable short shifter.
I like what everyone has done but maybe I’m just different but I really like the look of the stock shifter.
What I do not like is the sloppy feel and long throws including the ease of downshifting into the wrong gear!
Has anyone successfully installed a short shift kit that allows you to keep the stock shaft & ****?
I have a UUC Short Shift Kit on one of my BMWs and it’s really great! Notchy, tight, and there’s no way you can downshift to the wrong gear unless you’re an idiot!
I've gone with Cravenspeed's **** and the weight and feel is fantastic. My boot only reaches the bottom of their **** at the shifter's lowest position (which I don't really like for everyday driving) So I came up with another way to keep the boot where it is, with an independent collar that sits on top of the adjustment screw of the short shifter. This way, it stays where it is regardless of shift height.
I made a quick prototype, and am gonna machine it out of aluminum to match the craven **** once I get the tolerances right. Because of the plastic collar with that lip that notches into the stock ****, I had to use some o-rings that could be stretched over the top of the shifter and snapped into the collar to keep it nice and snug.
They can make one for the newer models that move driving modes to a toggle switch. Just won't work on the cars with the mode switch on the shift well ring. I asked Kellen about this a couple of years ago.
I guess I just dont understand enough on why its so difficult. The cup would sit lower than the ring so why is it a problem? There is a lip where the ring rotates so make a cup small enough to sit in that little channel. If you look at the picture a few posts up, the boot is under that ring. Make a piece to fit where that boot is
The selector isnt in the boot so its a bit confusing.
I believe it’s time that a factory workshop manual might be needed! How long does it take for someone to publish one? In the old days anyone could go to a BMW dealer and buy the same manual the BMW technicians used when wrenching on a car!
Sure would help in a situation like this instead of blindly tearing everything up! This is one reason I still have a stock shifter!
I’d totally code it into sport mode permenently if there was an option out there to replace the mode selector ring with something like cravens shift well cover.

Well, with the various apps and ESYS, perma-sport is done....... now its CravenSpeeds turn
Im half tempted to buy some plastic and make my own
Challenge accepted! We have it near the top of the development list again. There are some things that make the F56 shift well difficult/expensive to manufacture, but we will take another run at it and see what we can come up with.
@Sailingsumo, that looks like a cool solution. We could probably print you a black ABS prototype if you wanted?
@cravenspeed - already printed a few iterations in PLA but thanks for the offer!
Let me know if you guys need a test car for the shift well cover
Tossing my hat in the ring for a guinea pig, as I am just getting ready to install the short shifter myself! And I have the sport/mid/eco switch on the shift well in my 2017 JCW (and haven't coded auto-sport mode yet)
Thanks to you both! We should have no problem getting it designed and tested on our own F56. We'll see how the dial ring comes into play in the design.
Bringing this thread back from the dead. Going to replace the JCW **** & boot on my 19. Has anyone been able to remove this **** boot combo without a problem ? Let me know thank you.

In case it is helpful, we did end up making a shift well cover for the F56:
It will work with the stock shifter on the JCW (or our adjustable), then you could use any **** on there.
