Car is a 2017 JCW. The stock shifter isn't bad, but it's more sloppy than I like. I would like to tighten it up some and reduce the throw. Any recommendations?

 

Someone will likely mention the Craven Shifter (I think that's what it's called), but I'd prefer to keep the stock shift ****/shaft but employ a short shift kit (similar to what you can do in BMW's). My only real gripe about the F56 JCW is the shifter & clutch pedal feel are to "soft". I am getting used to mine, but I have found myself looking for 4th gear when downshifting too many times!...grrrr. It needs to be "easy" to find!

 

Have a look at the Forge short shift kit,i have one on my F56 and i am very pleased with it.

 

I feel exactly like you do. I like the shifter, just not the throws.

 

I like the Craven as it has the best feel even when you don't have it adjusted real short. Also allows you to adjust anytime you want.

Yup. Cravenspeed adjustable short shifter. It can be used with the stock **** or the **** of your choice. I had one in my R56 and liked it so much that it was one of my first mods on my F56. For myself, the combination of the CS shifter, CS Pro clip, and S4S shift **** are a perfect combination. YMMV

 

For stock height etc, I really like the NM adaptor which I have in my car. Makes a nice difference in the shifting length while keeping the shifter at a nice height and not making it too stiff. I also put in the Cravenspeed piece that goes around the ball when I did mine and that helped with some of the slack as well.

That's a great looking shifter, but I don't like that it requires heavy modification to the console and that you have to move some switches. I could see it for a "track only" car though.

I agree....that was my thought exactly! That shifter looks like it belongs in a serious track or race car, not a street machine.

 

i have incorporated that very smooth into my R56, but i agree that it is not a easy DIY solution, however placing the shifting *** close to the steering wheel together with minimum of effort, you shift out of you hand-angle, and basicly no miss shifts, its for me a must. The new F56 solution from CAE is a Golf MK1 basis,which i consider as ugly, we will modify a other unit from them, and remove the armrest and and some other parts ( 8 kilos less) and cover the middle section with a tradional carpet. This is certainly not only good for track but also underline the look of a classic coffee racer.

 

i removed my NM Engineering short shifter and installed the Craven Speed Adjustable short shifter along with their shift **** and shifter clip. There is a world of difference. Much reduced sport shifting somewhat like a Miata, and a better overall feel. I use it in its shortest position and will never go back to stock. I think it is one of the best mods that you can do to your manual F56.
