JCW Review - AWE Tuning S-Flo CF intake
Review - AWE Tuning S-Flo CF intake
Well today was a great day. I ordered the S-Flo and it was delivered today at noon. Installed on a 2016 JCW HT.
Unboxing of the intake - It was packed very well. You get all the items in the picture including a clever little bag with some hardware, a postcard and a little surprise (this keeps you occupied while doing the install). The postcard has a QR code that loads up the instructions beautifully.

I have to say I am not very mechanical and the entire process took me 30 minutes and that included taking all these pics and downloading the QR reader app.
Before pic

The install went well. The only thing I recommend is I just unscrewed the MAF sensor as I really couldn't figure out how the plug was attached and I didn't want to rip it off.

All of it went together great. I think the looks are awesome. I am not a CF professional only a fan but I feel this Carbon Fiber is very high quality and it looks great. You be the judge.

Performance
Well I took this for a little 10 mile spirited drive. I think the real test will be the next AX as I have a really good base line at high RPM's, cornering, acceleration etc.
My butt and ear dyno are calibrated pretty well so here is my interpretation.
Sound - Really the only bit I could tell was when letting off the accelerator pedal you get a "whirling" sound. I assume that is the turbo but I am not a professional so I don't know officially. It is a cool sound but really pretty subtle. I know my wife would not notice at all. I could because all windows were down and radio off.
Performance - My butt dyno felt like the car a bit (and I mean a bit) "pep-ier" for a lack of a better word. It felt like shifts were just a tad "crisper". This very well could be a placebo but who knows. In all fairness my car is bone stock so I wasn't really counting on much in the form of performance. I think when I eventually add the AWE touring exhaust that will be a little better but at the end of the day if you want performance, you have to get a tune in my book.
Appearance - hands down totally awesome. Adds that bling when opening up the bonnet. I really like the looks and it looks very high quality.
Cost factor - for me this is cheap but I am used to modifying a Porsche Turbo and I can tell you that there probably isn't anything you can buy for $400 in carbon fiber for the P car. Hell a CF key cover is $135.
At the end of the day I will report back after my next AX to see if I could notice anything more or different.

Nice looking bit of kit. I'll be interested in your review, such as sound and any noticeable performance gains. Not sure if it makes more power than my simple panel drop in K&N, or at least is it worth $350 more than a panel filter, but you sure do gain the bling factor. Would be nice to have for Mini takes the states this summer, already booked for trip!
Looks pretty good, but I've only opened my hood about twice in 2 years lol. I thought these CAI units mainly made the turbo sound better as opposed to increased performance. Weren't they more beneficial for the R53 cars with the superchargers? It costs the same as the Burgertune turbo booster. I think I'd buy that before this right.
