I'm a new owner of an R53 JCW. I've wanted one since they came out but life, kids, and a Bernese Mountain Dog named Cooper made it impractical. Anyhow, as of last Friday I have one to call my own.
The previous owner was an enthusiast and took wonderful care of it.
Anyway, happy to be part of the club now.
What have people done to improve the exhaust note. I don't want it to sound immature, but would like some more vroom sound.

Good Question, I have been working on my R53s in an attempt to get it sound more like my 2007 R52 JCW... I am planning to try to mount the R52 JCW exhaust system on one of my R53s... I normally would first double check the part numbers to see if they are the same or interchangeable but I haven't gotten to that yet.

The second thing I want to do is the ECM code export file from the 2007 and compare it to the 2004 ECM code export file, and see if I can hand edit any part of it to duplicate the "Pop and Burble" from the 2007.

Motor on!

Have a look at Milltek. Just a little louder at idle, good sound when on throttle. Pops and burble on decel. No highway droning. Fits wells and delivers a few extra hp.

you can cut the resonator; thatll make it louder for sure.
headers are also a loudening device

do both and its plenty of noise; not so much that there is a drone however, and really only loud if you really romp on it; i can creep no problem and be plenty quiet, or slam the gas and turn some heads

i kept the stock JCW muffs; i have tons of pop and burble with header and no resonator (also cut out the crimp, have a 2.5 exhaust all the way back through a hi flow cat.

Milltek is a good option , louder then stock. But not too bad. There is a resonated ( quieter ) and NON resonated ( louder ) version, which happened a little bit ago. The JCW exhaust does sound good , but Milltek even sounds better, love the pop and burble

Welcome to NAM! Do you have any pictures of your new JCW? Would love to see it. Can check out other options for exhausts here. They definitely give the Mini a great new tone.

Just changing the manifold will do it, for exactly the subtle change you're after, just *** a sensor angled extender for the downstream lambda probe, and the eml won't come on.

A 'much' cheaper option than swapping out a good exhaust.

Milteck or waymotorworks Stratosphere clone(suggest you get the resonated version)...fairly deep (for a mini) sound...no rasp, no drone...so $800 wish for a decent catback...the cheaper ones are raspy, done, or sound like a "fart cannon" ricer....
A "one ball" on a JCW does not work if you have a real jcw...the design of the exaust is different...
Cutting the resinotor off a JCW is OK...but not a good option...the used exaust is now worth much less, and they can drone/be loud at some speeds...
