A 3inch exhaust is too large and heavy. The 3inch will kill exhaust gas velocity, go with a 2.5 inch it will work better.

I would recommend the NM DP back or if you want the absolute best go Akrapovic.

We'll be testing a new 2.5" system vs. our 3" system again soon, probably early September. We'll post up the results, but every time in the past the 3" version won out on both power and turbo spool.

Of course the weight issue is brought up but this is very minor.

Lets use the stock JCW catback exhaust (AKA Downpipe exhaust) as an example. This system connects at the factory downpipe and is one really long single piece that weighs 31.2lbs.

The new ALTA Downpipe Back System weighs in at 34lbs. So adding 2.8lbs is too heavy? If we made our system in 2.5" tubing for a weight savings we would only loose 3.6lbs. So is that still too heavy? If that is really a concern, take your owners manual out of the gloove box, or don't eat too many cheese burgers, or get rid of the run flat tires (which will make your car faster).

We hit a perfect price point, reasonable weight, it sounds awesome, we have proven dyno numbers on almost every setup imaginable with and with out a tune, I am not sure why 2.5" is a NEEDED over 3.0" systems.

We get asked the question about 3.0" all the time that we made a post on our blog about this:

Click Here to read "Is 3" too big for my MINI?"

There are tons of dyno graphs there as well. Also if you look at one of the recent posts it has info about our new downpipe back exhaust system. The new downpipe back system makes 10 WHP on a tuned JCW, 5WHP on an untuned JCW (more HP on a Cooper S) and will have an introductory price of $889.99. Our catback (doesn't include the front section, so less 3" tubing) makes a solid 10WHP on a stock Cooper S and costs $799.99.

Going to smaller tubing isn't going to increase HP. This isn't a normally aspirated engine. Even then, do some searching on Honda forums, you will see 3" systems make more power and don't loose any HP. Here is a reasonable test on a lower HP K20

All I am saying is that many have been led to believe that 3" is too big and looses power, when really that is false info.

I just have a 2.5" stainless steel straight pipe from the cat back that finishes in a Magnaflow dual outlet finisher. There is no resonator, no muffler. It saves at least 20lbs of weight. It cost about $75 total. It looks pretty much stock. It sounds incredible - deep, but not loud at all. The turbo keeps everything quiet.

By 'dual outlet finisher' do you mean just a magnaflow exhaust tip? i.e.
