Insurance Curiosity

So, I bought a JCW Coupe over the weekend and put it on my insurance this evening and it went DOWN five bucks a month from my '11 S. Is this normal to everyone else's experience?

Wow, that seems odd, but good for you! I took my 2008 335i off my insurance and replaced it with my MCS and it went up a few hundred dollars.

You'd really have to get quotes because there are so many variables that go into insurance pricing. The fact that it's not an S will help you, but your age and the fact that you live in NYC won't help you at all.

Depends on the carrier too. Seattle isn't bad. Go to serenitygroup.com and you'll probably save even more because they will look at 7 different carriers for the best rate.

My insurance went down when I switched from my '08 R56 S to my JCW GP...

I would have thought it'd go up, but I won't complain about a slight decrease..especially at 24!

$5/month almost sounds like a new car discount. But your 2011 wasn't an old car.

Most insurance companies not only look into the drivers history..ie: tickets,accidents....

They look into the "history" of the car.. meaning if that type of car is involved in more losses the insurance is higher...

Now that being said a car driven by young new drivers...like the Scion..or if they had some money a WRX... it's more likely they will be involved in accidents, stolen, traffic violations, etc...

True the MINI S is a hot car but usually driven by a more mature group...
The JCW is a "Limited Edition".... I don't know numbers...but..? less then 1,000 Factory built each year? so...not many are driven by "kids" ..

JCW owners should be more mature...should be...... so with maturity comes with experiance... better driving record or more time to clear up a poor one...plus a better credit score which some insurance companies judge you by...better score less risk..they think...

My 2c...

we also factor

I'm a State Farm agent, just for full disclosure.

There are other variables too.
How much are the materials to repair
How many hours of labor are involved in a fix
$5/ month isn't much. It's likely that they are factoring in that one vs. the other is easier to work on and requires less labor.

the biggest one is a perceived risk based on experience like the mention of it being owned by a mature driver. having few losses on a particular model.

the biggest spread is in exotics. they are highly rated (expensive) but the driver can take the premiums way way down. I have two continental GT's in my book. relatively similar in location and use but one lady gets a lot of tickets and the other guy is very clean. both put on about 10k a year. one pays over $400/month and the othe pays just over $100.

there are almost endless variables that contribute to price. model, year, make, and driver are the most influential.

22 clean history for justa in my territory runs about $95 month for full coverage and $100/comprehensive $500/collision deductibles. Remember that in my territory the likelihood of being hit by an uninsured motorist is very low. in nyc its really high.
