JCW Factory JCW exhaust burble and pop
Factory JCW exhaust burble and pop
One of the few things I don't like about my R56 with JCW Stage 1 Kit is it lacks the burble and pop of the R53.
Does anyone know if there's something that can be done to get the burble and pop (other than selling my R56 and buying an R53 which isn't going to happen)?

that's not the same as the burble that STLMINI is talking about.
the r53's have a distinct burble that the r56's dont have.

listen to points :11 and :13, it's almost like backfire but "brubley"

Here is a good one of a Clubman S with the (I believe) factory JCW exhaust since the Stage 1 kit isn't yet available for the Clubby:

No, it's not. From my understanding it's an ECU thing; the engine "wastes" a little fuel when you lift to get the burble and pop. It's there on the Stage II JCW; it may take some programming from an aftermarket tuner to get it on the Stage I. It doesn't add anything to performance, but it's damned cool. One reason I won't part with my R53 JCW.
i've read the pop comes from the software
it's only present on my car with the sport button ON

Exactly.... the unspent fuel makes the burble. I know a lot of people have looked into changing the fuel maps but to the best of my knowledge, it's not happening.
On my older mini's, I hated the burble, it always made me feel like people were thinking my car was backfiring.
Now that I have an R56, I miss the burble....

Yep, a combo of the exhaust and the programming. It bleeds a bit of fuel to make the sound in sport mode. Mine "pops" more than anything. I haven't fully broken it in yet so I try not to beat it up too much. Unless the car is tuned different, it won't quite sound the same.
I used to have an 05 MCS with a deleted center muffler and OBX manifold, and that used to burble a hell of a lot, but my new Factory JCW doesn't burble. It pops and bangs and cracks, almost as loud as gunfire. And its completely stock.
i can't believe no one touched on this yet. the r56 will not make the same glorious noises as the r53 because it's turbocharged. a turbo by design is going to quiet down exhaust noises a lot more than a supercharger.
After owning 2 R53's and 2 R56's, I ASSURE you my R56 BURBLES out the yingyang.
In fact, it sounds waaay better than an R53.
Seriously though, point is it can be done.... right tune, right exhaust.

Not only does it burble a lot more, when it backfires it's 5 times louder than an R53's pops
What I'm saying is that all things being equal - if you take 2 cars with the same engine and same exhaust, and you bolt up a turbo to one and a supercharger to the other. The turbocharged car is going to be much quieter. That's simply the nature of its design since it's exhaust driven.
I'm not saying that it can't be done. Proper tuning and design can get a good sound out of anything.

Thanks Stig, actually it sounds much better now that I installed a resonator on it. It gives it a deeper sound and loses the raspiness of the video.

Mark, Sounds great. This whole discussion could have gone on back in the 60's with exhaust sound from a high lift cam. We called it the "Rump Rump" sound. What most didn't realize back then is like now with the burble, exhaust gasses not being burnt. Oh well, sounds nice.
