JCW JCW lacking...oomph!
JCW lacking...oomph!
My MCS with the JCW stage 1 kit went in for a service yesterday. They changed the oil and the air filter apparently, but not the plugs (should they have?). Driving around today I got the feeling that there wasn't the same snappy response, especially from 2 to 5000 revs. It just doesn't "feel" right. I never used the sport button after having the kit, but I used it today. Could the garage have somehow altered the JCW computer settings ? Do I need to give them that disc to reflash? When doing a service how likely is it that they could do something like this? Is this a likely scenario or am I paranoid. If I drop by with the disc is it a matter of minutes to reflash or whatever, or is it a long job? Lots of questions I know but the dealer is in another city, takes a long time to get there and as I'm in Taiwan and my Chinese is not great, the language barrier makes every discussion really difficult!! Thanks for listening!!
definitely sounds like a reflash. I have the JCW kit too - the sport button should make almost no difference.
as far as I know the JCW reflash (given you have the updated standard ECU image already) takes very short time.

Went there today and they hooked it up to the computer gizmo checker box like gubbins thingamajig (that's what they called it...), and there was only the one change to the ECU. I think it said I had 12 changes left..or possible changes. Turns out I was just silly. My seat of the pants dyno clearly aging. Thanks for the replies though
Back in my old days as a drag racer, when you tuned the vacuum secondaries on a Holley, if you inserted a really soft spring you would have sworn by the old "pants" that the car was faster but the time slips always proved slower.
What would happen is the soft spring would let the secondaries kick in earlier and thus the car would bog. As rpm came up you would get a huge surge as the engine overcame the brief fuel dump. Accelerator pump shot could do the same thing.
Lesson- just as in flying in IFR conditions...never trust the "SOYP"
Cheers,
Mike

Just to clear up a thing or two....
Plugs are not changed with the JCW update on an R56
Software reflashes, even if done by the dealer would not take away any JCW package programming. There is no input by the technician on a standard programming session. The PROGMAN looks at the software levels, establishes if there are any updates, and does the appropriate programming. So, the JCW update if installed would only be updated with a more current JCW program to correct for any issues that are going on.

There was a sticker on the drivers door saying that as this was a JCW the plugs should be changed after every oil change
Thanks for the reassurance about the program flash.

My JCW does not have that sticker either???
I also did not get a disc, was I meant to get one?
I am glad that I am not the only one that finds the sport button does not do much for outright power (on a JCW), just a different steering feel which I like.

Ok....I have read about this in the kit and it says: "If the spark plugs were last changed 10,ooo KM ago at the time of the JCW tuning kit is installed, the spark plugs should be changed in addition as part of the tuning kit installation(for part number and designation of spark plugs, refer to the electronic parts catalogue).
"The spark plugs must be replaced at each oil change after installation of the JCW tuning kit."
The sticker is supposed to be installed between the ignition cables on the cylinder head cover....
I haven't seen this sticker in the kit as of yet. These instructions are pertinent for the EUro market as well as US.
I don't see where the giving the Software disc is mentioned in the Install instructions and don't think it really matters anyway as the Software program number in X customers cars are updated to JCW tuning numbers. So like mentioned earlier, any updates to software would be updated JCW software, not regular "S" software.
