K&N Filter for R56 JCW Air Filter

K&N Does not currently make a air filter replacement for the R56 JCW Air filter. I put in a request for them to make one. If others are interested, they should put in a request, maybe if they get enough, they will make one

I am planning on replacing my paper filter as soon as I can.

You can request it here:

Hey MaximusGeek,
Have you thought of just getting Alta's panel filter?
I had that before I got their CAI, was a nice replacement over the stock paper filter.

The ITG filter will:

R56: http://www.minspeed.net/R56JCWITG.htm

R53: http://www.minspeed.net/ITGJC.htm

Not sure if it's considered to be better than a K&N or not though.

When I get my JCW Kit installed, I plan on pulling out the filter and measuring it to see if any K&N Filters fit. Ill post my findings here in case any one is interested.

Maximus,

Yeah i've had mine apart to see what would fit too. I can confirm that it is exactly the same as the R53JCW filter. Minspeed do the ITG foam filter and claim it fits both but i am still unsure. Under the clamping end of the filter there is a 'V' shaped lug that slots around the second securing lug. Does yours ( us spec ) have this 'protrusion' like mine?.

Are you talking about the plastic part that fits into the triangle fitting in the cap of the filter? Then yes. And yes, mine is a US kit. The R56 filter hangs upside down, I'm worried that a foam filter might come loose with out the clamp.

No, under the filter ( or rather on top of ) after you have removed the filter completely is a 'V' shaped protrusion moulded into the airbox lid.

Do you have this feature on US spec cars ?.

The ITG filter apparently uses the triangular retaining lug as the OEM paper one.

I trust this Flange Dia. is the OD. I think the flange ID ( and thus more important ) is 85mm !.

Green do a cotton dual cone cylindrical ( velocity stack ) filter which is the same OD, ID and length. Part number is TA3.85 IIRC. I had this fitted to my R53JCW and it was better than OEM. It is held in place with the Jubilee clip supplied.

I prefer the ITG one though as it attaches as per stock. My only doubt is whether it will fit because of the 'V' shaped protrusion pictured in my earlier post.

Japper,

I took mine apart again and yes, I have the same "V" on my air box. Looks like it part of the hold down for the filter.

Your right about the the other measurements, I took some more while I had the box open

I looked for the Green filter but could not find the part number. I see they make a Cold air intake for the R56. Do you have a link or different part number?

Air Guide:
Outside Diameter: 86mm
Inside Diameter: 81mm

Filter:
Flange Outside Diameter: 91mm
Flange Inside Diameter: 86mm
Flange Length: 14mm
Filter Length including hold down cap: 192cm
Filter Length no cap: 180mm
Filter Diameter: 117mm

MINI Mania Has a JCW Filter

Have you seen this item ?

http://new.minimania.com/web/Item/NM.../InvDetail.cfm

MINI Mania has been selling them for a while. Looks like a K&N unit...and cheaper than the factory JCW unit.

Buy one, check the measurements, then determine which K&N unit it is.

Take a look at this thread:
https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...31#post1807331

It mentions the K&N RU-3130 Universal Replacement Filter as fitting in the JCW Air Box.

K&N's webpage for the RU-3130 is here, listing dimensions:

Thanks,

Yeah this 'V' is the reason i can't see how the MinSpeed ITG filter will fit but after many e-mails they claim it does. However they will not send me photo's of the filter retaining end or photo's of it installed in the R56 JCW airbox. I'm not going to buy and ship something all the way over here to find it doesn't fit.

Anybody have better pictures of this ITG filter on it's own or fitted to their R53JCW that can help me figure this out ?.

Thanks again,

J.

Chief - Thanks for the link! Looks smaller than the JCW filter but worth looking into.

Apologies for delay, but please find attached

Hope this helps !

I'm thinking of going the K&N route and having an adaptor plate machined out of Black Nylon / ABS plastic to hold it securely in place ala the OEM one.

I tried the ITG filter from minspeed but it didn't fit. Part of the issue could have been a manufacturing issue with ITG as the flange was too loose to form a air tight seal with the air guide. I returned 1 filter with no luck and had to return the replacement as well. minspeed gave me a full refund.

I could tell that I had to modify the foam cap to accommodate the different JCW air box but it would have not been much work. While the R53 and R56 JCW air filters have the same part number, they way they are mounted are much different.

Still on the hunt for a good JCW replacement air filter

Why not just try the MINI Madness JCW Replacement Air Filter?

Stock filter swap

Just what are the steps to open the stock airbox to get at the air filter? After I remove the four screw bolts across the front then what? It is hard to see what holds what in place.

Thx

There's not really anything holding it. Unplug the sensor on top of the hose (to the right of the driver's side most screw.) Then, just lift the front of the air filter housing up and pull away from the firewall. It'll come out. It's got three "guide clips" back there. The "guide clips" don't really clip in they just hold it in place. Grab a flashlight and look back there, you'll see.

I installed the ITG air filter in the R56 JCW airbox tonight. It was straightforward and it's well worth the price and twenty minutes. Of course, you have to remove the front strut bar if you run it (25 ft-lb on the nuts).

The sequence is:

1. Disconnect the harness from the air sensor unit on the airbox.

2. Loosen the 4 torx screws. They have keepers in them so they don't come out.

3. Loosen the screw clamp on the output hose, downstream of the air sensor assembly, and pull back.

4. Lift front of airbox just a bit; it rotates off of tabs and slots in the rear of the airbox. Pull up and toward you to remove. Wrestling with the disconnected output hose that's always in the way, of course.

5. Vacuum and wipe the interior of the base of the airbox.

6. On the airbox top unit with the filter, remove the two screws at the top of the assembly and lift out the filter holding plate. Remove the single screw securing the lateral brace. Let it float in place. Remove the old filter and stash for use as a backup.

7. Vacuum and wipe out the airbox top assembly.

8. Install filter with logo facing out by simply sliding the bottom onto the airbox's mating ring.

9. There is a slot in a molded ring at the top of the filter. This articulates with a guide in the airbox top unit. Rotate the filter into place (logo-out).

10. I added a zip tie to the bottom mating ring. Note that when you first look at the filter-airbox assembly (upon initial removal), there is an unusual clamp, but I found out after disconnecting it that there was no need to do so. If you happen to do the same, the reattachment is described here (post 15 has a photo):

https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...p-is-that.html

11. Reinstall the filter holding plate with two screws, Secure the lateral brace with one screw.

12. Reattach the airbox top to the base in the MINI. This is not as easy as it seems, at least on my three forays into the airbox. Looking at the filter side of the top unit, you'll see that there is a single tab at the working end of the airbox. The tab is situated in a crowded narrow area that has to articulate with the base. If you just try to plug in the backside tabs, the airbox is misaligned because of the working end tab relationship. To install, you have to find the right angle to be able to capture all 4 back tabs and the side tab. Try to come in with the top unit parallel to the bottom unit while it is still 1/2" away from mating. It's a pain but suddenly it pops into place. Just go easy.

13. Reattach the harness to the air sensor.

14. Tighten the downstream screw clamp.

15. Tighten down the 4 airbox screws. I don't have torque number but go easy on the plastic.

16. Wipe down the airbox and you're done.

Have fun!

I'm moving my ITG filter install sequence to its own thread .. don't want to hijack this one. Thanks.
