Magnetic numbers and lightning bolt

Well, the new MCS arrives in a week or two. Art project #1 is to add magnetic numbers, etc. Thanks to previous posts on **** Blick as a supplier for sheets of magnet backed vinyl. I am now fully stocked with art supplies.

So here is the plan. My boys, ages 5 and 7, live a rich fantasy life, as do all kids. One is 'Lightning Man' and the other is 'Jaguar Man,' and their lucky numbers are 7 and 11. My chili red, black top will get a black 7/11 number in a circle on one door, and yellow Jaguar claws ripping lightning bolts in the other car door. We plan on creating templates in paper, attaching them with rubber cement to the vinyl, and then cutting out the designs.

Here are the questions:
  • Is it better to have numbers and design on both sides of the car, or just one on each?
  • If I put numbers on both doors, should I put the ligtning bolt on the panel in front of the door?
  • What dimensions do I have to work with for the front panel and the doors?
  • Has anyone seen a design that works that spans both front panel and door? Like or dislike?
  • What am I missing?
Any and all suggestions would be appreciated. Pictures to come...

You could create the jag/lightning images in a program like Photoshop at 72 dpi actual size. Then have Aesthetic Creations make a vinyl decal for you.

What about numbers on the doors and the design on the roof? That would be very MINI.

Are you cutting the numbers out of vinyl decal material? If you have to buy a roll of vinyl to do that, perhaps it would be cheaper to have them cut for you?

Love the idea! But be very careful with the magnets - you can scratch the bejeezus out of your car if the car itself and the magnets are not pristine all the time. You might want to check into getting it done in vinyl.

But as far as the design, there are a lot of people here that are good with Photo Shop that can help you. Maybe you can find some graphics on the web that are close to what you are looking for to help get you started.

Robin,
My friend, the self-proclaimed pixel monkey, is doing the design. I like the idea of putting it on the roof. The numbers will be cut out of a magnetic roll i already purchased.

Thanks for the cautions - I have read the previous posts so I plan on putting the magents on only when taking the kids for a spin. You sparked an idea - I will save the eventual designs in a tube to hold down on dust and crud. I guess i will need to put a cleaning kit in the tube too!

I was told by one company -- might have been MightyStripes -- that they no longer do magnetic vinyl because it scratches the paint too much. A small piece of dust (much of which is silica) between the paint and the vinyl, drive around with everything vibrating, scratched paint.

Project Update

Well - I gotta do something while I wait for the car.

Here are the images. We plan on putting the paw print with scratch marks (lightning bolts) on one car door, and the numbers on the other door. You cannot see it here, but paws and bolts fill the entire door from left to right.

I particularly like the retro feel the oval outline gives to the numbers.

It just arrived yesterday. As you can see, the kids loved it, as of course do I!

store your magnets on a metal surface like the side of a fridge to keep them flat and clean when not in use. . .

really fun stuff!
