Rusted metallic UNDER the clearcoat?

so the past couple of times i have washed my car i have noticed that on the rear hatch that UNDER the clearcoat of the paint it looks like pieces of my metallic paint job (pure silver) are rusting? There are little what looks like rust specs all over the rear of the car.

Is this normal? If not is this covered under my warranty? I am perplexed.

Are you absolutely positive that the specks are *under* the clearcoat? In other words, have you tried hitting them with detailing clay? The back end of our cars is notorious for collecting dirt in the form of specks, and they're hard to remove (impossible, almost) with normal washing.

The metallic particles in paint are either polyester film or aluminum flakes, so they shouldn't rust in either case.

i think i may have the same thing. have you tried to clay bar it?
i had some on the top and a tiny bit on the sides too. mostly on the back.
i used clay bar.( in the COLD) and took most of it off..but not 100%
when i went to the dealer to get my a/c 'fixed' and askede them about the 'rust' spots
they said that it's not rust but something else on the car.
i may have another go at clay barring once it stops raining every other day and when it's hotter.

They might be rail dust.

I have the same thing! It looks to me like its something that comes from the rear wiper. Because it looks as if something just above the rear emblem below the window has oozed or dripped on to the paint. It is a ***** to get off and is now all around the emblem. Anyone else have this?

Don't worry, you really have to really really mess up to hurt your finish with clay bar. Like, so bad that I don't even know what you'd have to do. Clay bars are very safe.
