What can an upholsterer do?

I'd like to do something with the seats on my car.

I originally wanted Space Cloth, but I bought the car in that window of time when you couldn't get it. So, I was torn between the seats with the Tartan Red center and the leatherette. I wasn't sure the red would look good with the DS (it probably would have), so I went with the -ette.

But, now I'd like something else. I've never had upholstery work done, so I don't know exactly what can be done. I have the gray inserts, would it be possible to pick out a cloth material and have someone replace it in just that area, or would they have to do the whole seat? What does something like this generally cost? I'm sure its completely dependant on the experience of the craftsman, but do these things usually look good when finished?

I'd love to find a source for the Interlagos plaid that VW uses, and have that put in. Or better yet, the checkerboard pattern that Porsche used in the '78 928. Yeah, baby!

agreed, they can do anything you want, comes down to how much you want to spend. There are people here that have had their seats and other stuff done, and they look great. I plan on having my seats re-done in the next couple of years....but so far, I have done the rest of the interior...dash, door cards, steering wheel, shifter boot, etc.

I have seen some that have done complete alcantara dash and headliner, doors, seats, etc. MINI2 has some GREAT interiors, just start searching.

Talk to Peter of Minspeed (formerly myminiparts.com) he has a Bently leather specialist in house that does incredible interiors.

I was at the shop when they were wrapping up a blue leather interior, we are talking everything - dash, doors, seats, ...... the aroma, the dual stiching was to die for.

if you are not local to Pete, having seats re-done can be way expensive due to shipping costs....better to find someone local. They do a great job with their steering wheels, dash and door cards.

Hmm. If shipping seats is too expensive, I guess I could just take a long vacation in Miami. But a guy with Bentley experience is a little much for me. Connelly leather would be nice, though .

I guess I'll just start talking to some local shops. Thanks for the tips, everyone.
