Interior/Exterior Modifying the rear wing/spoiler
Modifying the rear wing/spoiler
Has anyone tried to modify the rear wing on a Cooper S to get some airflow over the rear window?
I'm thinking that if you could build up a boundary layer of air over the rear screen it might just stay a little cleaner
Thoughts anyone?

one of the reasons I purchased. If it does help ANY to keep the dirt off, then great, otherwise I've got expensive kewl wingbling

I had witnessed the Dirty Boot Phenomenon while it happened right before my eyes. The conditions were perfect to actually see what happens.
I was on a stretch of Rt.9 and it rained not long before, the tar was wet, but my car was completely dry, but for some reason I had to keep hitting my rear wiper. After the wiper had cycled a few times, I could actually watch in my rear view mirror as the moisture/mist came up from under the car and wet the window.
Having witnessed this first hand, I believe the only way to keep the boot clean is to direct a constant flow of air over/down it, to counter the air coming up from underneath.

I heard from my local shop that a rear diffuser will help with that upflow of air/dirt that no one likes. Plus they look kind of cool. Maybe Maxmini from M7 will see this and tells us if his has any effect.
That's a kewl rear bumper anti-dirt mod, let us onto the details...
The "flow through" rear bumper was an early mod of mine.
Really very easy. The FAKE grills pop right out.
Bend and a bit of cutting of the heat shield.
You then have access to mount mesh without removing the bumper.
I can do the whole thing in about and hour now.
I will be doing one thiis weekend and will take photos and do a how-to

COR BLMY, nice work with the mesh there!!
I also did my own mod back there, but it was to the stock fake vents.
I'll have to post some pics., but basically the backing on the fake vents can be grinded away exposing the stock mesh pattern and allowing air to move right thru. Pretty easy to do and looks stock of course.

More down force less back draft wanted...
This tail looks very nice, but does it reduce the effect of upflow of air/dirt and keep the back a little cleaner?
another thing that I noticed is that it looks very similar to the M7 CF Front Splitter shown here in this pic (taken from maxmini & JCW Driver)

what do you guys think...
It does seem to help a bit with dirt / dust
(the MINI is still a box at speed
)
YES ... the wing I built was to complement the M7 splitter.
I have the splitter and my wing...
now they both look like they belong.
NOTE:
The wing is NOT wind tunnel tested...
( well I have driven in a tunnel - with the wing .... )
I figure it doesn't hurt and I like the look

I don't think that I will be joining a F1 team anytime soon
(that wind tunnel testing will not be needed at all)
I just hate that dirt on the rear end of my mini everytime I use it to go to work. I'm still looking for a good looking rear wing that gives a bit of more down force and some clean up service
.. actually best bet is the JCW wing but the one used for racing and not the one that comes with the kit... I'd buy that if I can get my hands on one
good luck though and good stuff you got there

I did see one fellow who was just as much against dirt as you are, and many others
He had a small rubber strip mounted (glued) on the inside of the wing hole
(does that make sense ???)
I asked him about it and he said he had something simmilar on a EUV that had the same issue (I remember my dad had a foil on the back of the o'l station wagon, so us kids could be in the back with the window open)
He said it worked !

Here is an interesting find [pdf file from a Stanford Science Fair contestant], just googled "MINI Cooper wind tunnel" and..

but increases down force
the way i'm driving now I need a wing to add 5-10 additional
visual HP
and was just looking also at the FBR CF rear spoiler, but it might be too much for me... anyone knows where I can get the JCW motorsport rear spoiler? and a guy to always keep the MINIs' rear clean
I sent an email last summer to Paul Cooper (paulc@johncooper.co.uk)
and asked if he could ship me one. He replied almost immediately
and I had the wing at my front door three days later. You may try
that - or use the contact email address on the website.
