just got my E39 tow hook from eBay and it's awesome looking but i've read people saying that it sticks out to far. have a little mod for that.

What i did was to take out the nut from the front of the hook that adjusts to make sure it can get straight and level. after i did that, i tested on the car and it was of course crooked so i went into my little screws and nuts and washer bin and tried finding a metal washer but they were just a bit too small or way too big so i dug some more and i found a 1/2" rubber o ring. i put that on and it tightened the hook down to exactly the correct place with some snug tightening, it's perfect and it's shorter by around 3/8" (thickness of the nut).

Maybe I was just lucky but mine tightened up at 12:00 exactly so the tow hook is vertical. It looks pretty good and who care if it sticks out. Heck isn’t that what you want anyway? I like your solution just remember that the rubber o-ring will degrade over time especially with UV exposure. Check to make sure it’s tight from time to time.

Cheers!

hey yeah i can take a picture of it. glad you got so lucky and your got vertical.

yeah when i wash my car, i'll make sure it's still viable and will change accordingly until i find a metal washer that will fit.

Good luck with that tow hook. I bought mine off eBay too, for $60. It faded to a pink color within 2 weeks.

Yeah, after reading similar post, I went silver, plus if you're on race track a tow truck need to find it fast so you want a contrasting color...not that pink isn't visible

The Ebay hook was decent and we did a simple pull test to make sure it would work. Not that I would want to lift the car off the ground. It will work but I hope I never really need it!
