D'oh! Lost an exhaust tip

Please, everyone learn from me - if replacing your stock exhaust tips, even if it's just for another pair of stock tips, use some loctite!! I swapped out my originals for another pair that wasn't so dinged up, and at some point on Saturday, one fell off. I honestly didn't think I'd need to use any loctite, but I was proven wrong!

did you torque your bolt while the exhaust was hot?

at high temps those loctite becomes more liquid...so not sure how
well it works. i don't use loctite on my exhaust bits.

No, I made sure the exhaust was cool to the touch.

Hmm, good point. I'll check out the label before I buy it to see if it mentions anything about heat. Do you use anything to keep your bits from coming undone?

Do you need a new set of tips? I have a set taken from my '06 MCSa at 500 miles. They are like new. I also have an OEM one from an '03 Cooper at about 5000 miles and it just needs cleaned [no dents].

PM me if interested.

Jeff

kenchan, both the Loctite Threadlocker Blue (non-permanent) and Red (permanent) are rated up to 300 degrees F. I bought some of the blue and will put it on both tips tomorrow.

welshmen, thanks for the offer. I don't need anymore tips right now, but should another one fall off, I'll be in touch

I pull mine off to clean them semi regularly, just make sure they're good and tight. I've been fine so far (may have a little dent in the pipe from being so tight though).

I just cranked mine down REALLY hard... I did notice that it was easy to mis-align the tips when laying under the car, and that made them unstable. When replacing the tips, step back and make sure that the ENTIRE pipe end fits into the matching circluar fitting inside the exhaust tip. If you see a crescent of pipe in the tip opening, the tip isn't centered, so when you tighten it down the tip can still slip off.
