Are you talking about hard-wiring one into the existing power socket wiring, or running an extension cord from the one in the boot? I bought a 10' extension cable from Radio Shack and tucked the cord into the driver's side lower cabin molding when I did this...

If you want to just hard-wire it, most electronocs stores have the cig lighter part for just a few bucks.

If you're looking for info on how to tap the power, see my page here:
http://www.jwardell.com/mini/fusetap.html
You can then add a lighter socket to that and mount in your shelf if you want.

Just look at Radio Shack or your local auto parts stores. I wasn't really happy with the ones I found there, so I ended up using a socket from an OEM 'power point' option from Subaru. It includes two sockets with hinged covers.

Hey, Josh... can that power tap unit be used with ANY size second fuse? I have something hooked direct to the battery currently that I've occasionally left turned on when I exited the vehicle and running it so that it can ONLY turn on when the ignition is on would be a plus. It has a larger fuse than 5 AMPs though... Instead of a 5 Amp fuse as the power tap point, would you use a larger-amperage one in the block, maybe?

Wow, that is SUPER easy-looking. Thanks!

I'm looking for either an OEM-looking socket or one with a flap cover.

Product description says 10AMP fuse is the max for that tap device. Just FYI...

MrV - Great write-up! LMAO when the picture was black because the battery was disconnected.
Humor and detail - best of both worlds.
Thanks

Here is mine from a few years ago. Don't know if the fuse numbers and functions are the same but the process is rather easy. Great little mod and tons usefull!

The simple answer would be "within reason" because it depends on the rating of the hardware in the socket and the add-a-circuit. 10 or 15 I would think. Most electronics are under 1 amp though so I wonder what the heck you are running? I would NOT use it to power a stereo or amplifier for example (But those usually get their main power from an always on battery direct wire, and a second wire that uses almost no current to signal when ignition is on)

I was going to use this for my driving lamps, since in their current installation they're hooked to the battery and can be left powered on, even with the key out of the ignition. My lights use a 20 AMP fuse, though, so that won't work... Oh well...

you need a relay in there. The switched power goes to the relay, which manages the line from the battery to the lights. (turns it on or off)

They are relayed. But the power comes from a direct connection to the battery, so if the switch is "on" then the lights are on, regardless of whether or not the ignition is switched on. The interior fuse panel only turns on when the ignition is switched on, so if I were to ever forget and leave the switch on, the lights would deactivate when I pull the key out.
