Using Black Tape to dechrome?

Well I am searching for a way to make the chrome outline that goes around the entire car.. (at the bottom of the windows.. I really dont know what the technical term for it is) black.

I remember hearing a lot about some sort of black tape you guys use to do this. But.. TAPE? Is this stuff durable? Does it look good? Does it come off easily? Does anybody have pictures of this being done?

Thanks.

Do a search on "Scotchcal". That's the brand of tape. I've had it on my car for about a year and it still looks great.
Hope this helps.

I have it done to my MINI. So far it's been durable (1month), it looks great! and it's very easy to apply. Just make sure not to stretch the material when you are putting it on. If you do, some chrome will show through...like I did because it was 100 degrees and I was rushing.

Thanks for the info guys. Now which one should I buy? The one from outmotoring, my mini parts, or autopaintersupply??

And one quick question. Around the curves of the car do you have to use separate pieces of tape?.. or do you use one long strand to cover it? It seems like it would look bad to use more than one piece of tape around curves.

I almost bought the kit from OutMotoring... untill I saw the shipping... ouch.

I have been thinking of doing this for a while, maybe I can find the 3M tape around town.

Only cut the material where there are breaks in the beltline.

There is a technique to applying this stuff. I can see why it's sold in a quantity enough to do 4-5 cars....it'll take that many to get them all perfect!

Not true...I messed up in a couple of spots...but that was because it was 100 degrees outside, I was hot...and I wanted to rush it and get it done. If you take your time, it's very simple....but it's just that, take your time.

And the tape IS 3M tape....so it's all the same stuff, so it doesn't matter where you get it. If you mess up though, for $25 you get 150ft.

When applying the tape be carefull not to stretch it. Clean the chrome molding with a pre-cleaner and take your time! Once the tape is in place and pressed down, remove the outer protective cover and the low gloss product matches the rubber mounting around the beltline perfectly. You can see it on my mini in my gallery (CHKMINI Blacked-Out).

For the belt mouldings I used the 3M Scotchcal Tape 1/2 wide in Low Gloss Black. 3M part number is 72793.
The 1/2 inch covers the chrome perfectly. Hatch and sides are easy to do. On the lower windshield, just be careful when you make the bend at the corners. Stick it on long and trim the ends with a razor blade to fit.
