So my dad is helping me do some work on my car this weekend as a sort of bonding thing i guess .

Any way he wants to paint my stock brake calipers. I found this kit online.

Any one have any idea if this kit works well at all? I am really kinda worried about ending up with a crappy honda civic looking job on my calipers and im hoping that the finish of this wont look that way. I plan on changing to stoptech calipers and new rotors in the future (maybe a year or two) so i guess it doesn't matter.

I guess I'm asking is this worth it and will it look decent in any way.

 

I used the G2 kit on my calipers. It works pretty good...

 

Its just like the kit from Duplicolor which you can pick up @ most local auto parts stores. Usually the paint lasts 6 months or so before needing a repaint.

 

I've had mine on for more than 6 months, I drive it everyday and they still look good. They could use a cleaning.

 

I have had mine on for two years and it still looks good. Just clean them when you clean the wheels.

Just a suggestion for others (for future brake work)--- remove the retaining spring that holds the carrier to the caliper when you paint it as well as making sure the 2-part paint does not clog the holes for the retaining spring.

I went to Advanced Auto and picked up their Dupli-color brake caliper paint kit for about $18. It includes aerosol caliper cleaner, a can of red paint (good for painting about 100+ brake calipers), and a paintbrush. The paint claimes to withstand temperatures up to 500 degrees. If you ever track your car, your brakes will probably get much hotter than that, but for 95% of daily driving its just fine. I have had mine painted for a week so far and they are still shiny red.

If you still have stock brake pads with lots of dust, I would recommend you to get some EBC Greenstuff pads or Hawk HPS pads with about 10x lower brake dust and your calipers and wheels will stay cleaner and look better a lot longer.

I used the G2 kit on mine. It works well but you ought to get yourself another can or two of brake cleaner (the kit comes with one can), particularly if you have an older car. The paint will stick to the dirt and not the caliper, so you want to make sure those babies are nice and clean (or as close to nice and clean as you can get).

Also, you can get the kit a little cheaper on eBay.

I used the Folia Tec, which is the same as the G2. The "Speed Yellow"
is a true yellow that matched the LY better than the Duplicolor, and
they also offer some other interesting colors. Folia Tec is a German
Company that claims to have colors that match the paint on European
cars more closely than other brands. When you want to paint the calipers
on your Elise a stunning Krypton Green, this is the brand for you.

 

What about custom colors? I want to paint my calipers pink, and I am getting white rims. So can I use any dupicolor paint or only the paint in the kits?

 

The only pink paint I know about is engine paint. It is VHT
brand made by Speco. I don't know if this would work on calipers
or not - maybe some tech-savvy gurus can advise?

I just painted my calipers using VHT. I bought Red and Yellow cans, and sprayed them into a jar to mix. Then used a disposable brush to apply to calipers. I wanted Orange and got it!

Each coat dries in 20 minutes or less. I found that the first coat looks thin, but takes only minutes to dry enough so that you can begin adding new coats.

The paint is rated up to 900 degrees and is called brake caliper paint.

I used the Duplicolor caliper paint kit from Wally World. Painted them twice in one session. You know, start on the right front and work your way around the car. By the time you get back to the right front everything is dry and you do it again. There's enough paint in that can to paint your calipers once a year for 3 or 4 years.

1 year and 20k miles later they still looked swell but I cleaned them real good and slapped on another coat.

Can't beat the price!

Took me 5 coats and still have bloches.
My advice is don't get this product.

 

I painted mine this last weekend. I used the kit that i purchased from tire rack and they turned out great. I went with red as my car is red and im going for a cr/bl theme.

I did two coats on mine and they seemed thick enough even though i had a bit of extra paint left. Ill post pix later but the thing is they dont really shine through my s-lites, not to worry though those will go soon.

Hmmm....would calipers look stupid painted PW?

I can handle not being able to do the headlights...but this looks too fun (and a lot easier!).

 

I think they would look great although hard as heck to clean. Worth a shot and I haven't seen it yet so you would at least have something different looking.
