What the heck is it?

Ok... Me and another Cooper S owner want to know what the little box inthe middle of out headliners is? it has little side vents on it and i thought it was for the AC, but no air blows threw it.

My Firend had a cooper before his S and his cooper didnt have that little box.

any one know whats it for and why we have it?

It's for the interior infrared alarm sensor.
Prior to '03(?) they didn't have the box. It pops off easily, you'll see the sensor wire tucked up in the headliner.

I have this on my first production week '03. I don't have an alarm, and never will... Thinking about removing it, but don't know if it will be an eye-sore once gone...

Yep, it is where the motion sensor for the alarm goes. I think it also allows access to the antenna base. I am taking mine apart this weekend and will let you know for sure.

It's easy to remove. Just pull it down and you'll find a rather unattractive 4x4 hole in the headliner.

Well, that answers my question then. I don't want such a large hole, so it stays put...

I've actually wondered if it wouldn't make a nice spot for a stealth radar detector, but I think it's 'view' is blocked.

How about a hidden camera to see who is stealing your car or doing other nefarious acts in it?

I better be the only one doing nefarious acts in my MINI.

How about a licorice whip dispensor, a la the Mirth-mobile in "Wayne's World"?

What about a teeny, tiny, rotating mini mirrored discoball?! That would be hilarious!

You are. We've got the video coverage from Vegas to prove it!

That could work, but you'd need to encase your whips, lest they get covered in headliner dust.
