Interior/Exterior Painted Sunroof
Painted Sunroof
As many people have brought up the subject of heat build-up in a parked MINI on a hot sunny day, I tried something new. My 05 CR was ordered with a dealer installed American Flag roof graphic. It lasted about 14 months and started to lift in one corner. I removed it, but noticed the car seemed to get much hotter when sitting in the sun!
i did not want to spend another $250 for a dealer installed graphic. And so, the hunt began for an alternate solution....
A friend has a body shop and found an epoxy primer that adheares well to glass. We primed the sunroof ,(2 mil thick coating, several coats applied) painted and cleared the sunroof, used pinstriping tape to put a black edge around it.(the felt edging around the sunroof was masked-off to give a "Factory Appearance". Roof looks great, heat build-up is greatly reduced, and one unexpected result.........from the inside of the car, the sunroof has now become a "MIRROR" !
I like it, it reflects the whole interior if you look up at it! Thought I would pass this on in case anyone else would permanently like to cure the "Hot Sunroof Problem".........

No, I haven't taken any pictures yet, just brought it home from the body shop. I will take some pictures, and post them. I have allways liked the looks of the white roof with the CR body, but also wanted the sunroof, now, it looks like I've got both, and the paint should hold up well. Can't wax for about 2 weeks, the Epoxy primer takes that long to fully cure under the paint.
I saw a BMW the other day with the same thing done...and I thought of this thread. It looks very nice, and well done.

I just need to cut down on the amount of light... too bright!
Anyone know whether the Cooper Flags graphics are better or worse than OEM. I'm thinking all white, and I want to still let in some light rather than go entirely opaque. So, I'm thinking of what's better in terms of longevity & overall quality.

Good idea, and it came out really nice!
I would be alittle concerned with how it handles heat though. Time will tell.
Personally I like the perferated stickers by cooperflags because you can still see through the sunroof from the inside.
Mine's about at the end of its life though so I will have to think of something new soon.
