Is there a chrome gas cap on the base model. It doesn't appear to me there is - just on the S. Where can I get one for the base model and is it just an easy swap out? Thanks.

I think RSpeed has what you are looking for here. Some of the other aftermarket suppliers may as well... you could check the sponsor directory and perhaps find other options. The one from RSpeed looks pretty nice but I'm not sure how easy installation will be. It sounds like you have to paint the body trim piece.

Hope this helps!

Monsta has, he has photos of what he did up on Mini2:

And the parts and instructions from r speed are up on this site:

I hope to do this myself. The chrome cap is something I've wanted from the first day I picked up the car. So good luck.

I did it and it looks fantastic. So much better I don't know why MINI even sells the Cooper without the chrome cap.

You should know that the bezel for the S gas cap comes primed (greyish) unpainted. You need to get it painted through you dealer. It cost me about $100 for painting and installation by my dealer. They did a great job.

Moss Motors sells an aluminum gas cap cover replacement that looks really good.
It completely covers the opening like the original, so no painting required...
Not the same as the S cap though.

Woodside, do you have any pictures of your car with the chrome gas cap installed?

Welcome to MCO by the way!

I am pretty sure I am going to attempt this soon. Where do you get the paint from though? I saw in Monsta's photos that he has paint cans from the Mini Corporation. Guess I could ask the dealer to sell them to me huh.

For those who attempted this did you find it tough to force the new piece in there (rumor has it that it takes some muscle). Also did you take the wheel off for easier access.

Thanks in advance.

moss mini

Has anyone put this cap on? I've been thinking about it. Does it install over the existing cap, or is it easy to take the metal part of the cap off and re-attach the aluminum one to the black plastic underpiece? Anybody??

I've done this mod and yes it is a significant improvement to the cooper. I believe there are 2 types of chrome gas caps available, the "S" type and the "Audi TT" type which is a much much easier install, just twist off your original and twist the new one on. Also during my mini sites webcrawls, I thought I came across a UK company selling a can of Mini body color (your choice) spray paint and a can of clear coat together with the kit, but I don't remember which site though, could probably find a link to it from either here or Mini2. Cheers!

Which one did you do- the much more extensive RSpeed replacement, which requires the sleeve being painted, or the Moss MINI one, which is supposed to go right on w/ no problems? I'm not interested in a major retrofit, but I might be interested in the Moss MINI one if it's truly easy, though the more difficult one to install is only $80, while the Moss version is $124- a pretty spendy goodie!

The MCS gas cap OEM part came in the mail today. I will hopefully have it on in the next two weeks (as the weather and my schedule cooperate). I will take before and after shots and post them once completed.

peace out, motor on!
