Interior/Exterior Retrofit new rearview mirror w/UGDO (homelink) on my 06!
Retrofit new rearview mirror w/UGDO (homelink) on my 06!
Since I didn't have time to wait around for a custom ordered MINI, I had to pick up one that a local dealer already had in stock. One of the options I would have liked to have was the Universal Garage Door Opener (aka: UGDO or homelink) that is built in to the rearview mirror. When I found out you could just order the mirror for about $200, I called up Classic MINI, and ordered one! (Part # 51-16-7-133-702) UPS delivered the package today, and I installed the mirror on my 2006 MCS tonight.
Installation was simple, and only took about 10 minutes!
Just push up slightly on the headliner, and rotate the base of the mirror 90 degrees (either way). You have to use a good amount of force to rotate the mirror, I thought I was going to break something, but it just snapped off cleanly like it was suppose to. Once it was just hanging there by the wire, you have to push in on a small clip on the mounting shell, which will then just fall right off. Once the shell is off, you can unplug the wire harness from the original mirror, and plug in the new mirror. After that, just snap the mounting shell back on, and push the mirror up against the headliner, and rotate the mirror back into place.
Programming the buttons was easy, as it was detailed in the owners manual.
One small annoyance is that you have to hold the button down for a second or two before it sends the signal to open the door, not like the quick click of the normal garage door opener. On the positive side though, the range from which it works seems much further, and now I don't have all (3) of my garage remotes sliding around in my car!
Here are a few pictures of the new vs. old mirror, and a couple others. The UGDO mirror is the exact same size as the original 06 mirror.

Do you know if this same mirror would just plug in on an 04?

I know in 05 they went to this larger mirror. I am not sure if the pre-05's have the same wiring harness that you could just plug into or not.
Anyone else know?

Great mod - I just spent a half hour programming mine and my husband's Homelink. They've been non-cooperative with our new garage door opener until now, and I hadn't really had time til now to sit down and figure out what the problem was. The MINI directions didn't work but the ones from Homelink's website worked just fine. One less thing rattling around in my MINI!
That's good info, Way. I'm a cheap (poor) SOB, but happy to send biz your way.
I had a few people PM me about the Part # of the Autodimming Mirror with Homelink. The part number of the mirror I ordered is 51 16 9 134 363.
The price I paid was $345 and not the list price on that sheet.

2003 MCS Wanting to retrofit Homelink w/Auto Dimming Rear View Mirror
Has anyone retrofitted a 2003 Mini MCS with a homelink/auto dimming rear view mirror?
I need help. Part numbers, suggestions, or other information would helpful.

Sorry for bumping up this old thread. Does anyone know how the R52 convertible mirror differs from the R50/R53? All the mirrors for the R52 seem to be incompatible with other models. Is it something to do with the key less entry receiver? Or the mount?
Thanks
