Has anyone seen black S side marker vents? Any ideas on how to make them black? The thought of spray paint crossed my mind, but it doesn't seem like it would be very durable.

I think it would like really good. The black went with the red S!

You could customize the heck out them for ~$30:

-one can of plastic primer with elastisers
-one can of black paint (color coded to the black mirror/tops on the MINI) with elastisers

Both can be bought online at http://www.towerpaint.com. Comes in a spray can with a special nozzle that gives a wide pattern spray. Would be very easy to give a coat of primer, then a coat of black.

What is the name of plastic primer? I can't find anything that fits your description on towerpaint. Also, do you know what the paint code is for that black?

Thanks in advance

I'm having my S grilles painted black by a local body shop. My main concern about not doing it myself is the possibility of the paint not holding very well against the slick chrome surface. The body shop plans to sand blast and agitate the surface to provide some more "bite".

After removing the side grilles from the car, carefully remove the black perforated screen from the back of the grille. At that point, you'll notice that the "S" can be removed from the body of the grille. Furthermore, you can even remove the surface of the "S" from the rest of its body. You'll end up with 3 convenient pieces (minus the perforated screen) which make it much easier to spray, since there's now less crevices to deal with.

I also recently had a custom decal specialist make me some replacement colors for the "S". Since I have a black/black MCS w/lapis blue interior, I plan on replacing my red S with a blue one.

Also, I wanted to let you guys know that the decal guy plans to make many more of these S's in different colors (including carbon fiber) for sale. PM me if there's interest.

I'm probably not going to tackle this for a few weeks at least. I will post pics when I do complete it though.

Just out of curiosity, what did they quote you to paint them?

Just sand them with a high number grit (like 500+) and you'll be fine. As for the primer...you can call them and tell them what you are doing and they'll suggest what you need. Just tell them you need a primer to go over plastic with chroming which you'd sanded for some bite. They suggest a primer with plastisers. Call your dealer for the black paint code.
