dechroming standard MCS grill??

Helloooo NAM!
Yup. I've been thinking about getting a set of Aero Grill
but sigh.
I want to see if anyone tried this before..!

DEChrome the standard MCS grill and paint it with same color with body.

I think it will look unique..

Can anyone give me an idea on this?

going to have to really sand that chrome down to get paint to stick. evee than the results might be dicey...

I would look at painting the slats black, or dark grey depending on the coolor of your car....or adding the areo grill!

For around $75, buy a new grill in the color you want.

I assume you are talking about the surround since the grills come in body color. It would look pretty good painted.

I think the grill may be the first project for me after the new year. I was thinking about the aero grill, but I am not that talented with a drimel. I can turn a wrench though. I am just waiting for the xmas wallet drain to pass. Than I am going to get a second grill and play with that.

Shouldn't be hard actually. Slats come in body color, no work needed there and for the chrome, get some fine grit sand paper and sand the chrome down as much as you can. Then prime it and paint it. Black would of course be the easiest because of color matching.

I am painting my side grilles black and that's how I am doing it. Using flat black SEM paint on them.

Anyone tried the M7 Ultimate Upper and Middle grilles? They're expensive ($200) but they're steel, not plastic, and they don't have to be cut up to fit like the aero grilles. I think they'd look really sharp in black.

man, its like you guys hadnt ever taken chrome off plastic before!

......well, i guess people dont need to do that that often...

from my days of scale modeling, if you use a powerful oven cleaner, it will strip that chrome right off that plastic. i plan on doing it when i paint my handles and surrounds.

as far as the gascap goes, sandblast it with something like Sillica sand and then use an epoxy primer to level out any imperfections caused by sandblasting.

any oven cleaner. you know, the stuff that foams up.

i ant think of any names off the top of my head, but when you smell it, it should have a slight hint of what wheel acid smells like. its a pretty strong product.

also, dont leave it on for too long, it will eventually melt thru the plastic.

whats the point of modding you car if everything is bolt-ons and done by someone else. Its being creative and working on your own car that really counts

Let us know how it goes

I talked to the body shop at Brecht MINI/BMW about this very subject. Being highly trained professionals, they said I'd have to have the chrome sandblasted (or "mediablasted" as they say these days) off.

The grille surround probably isn't expensive, so it wouldn't cost much to put the over cleaner theory to the test, though.
