Badge Help

I bought some really cool JCW badges and tried to affix them and have a bit of a problem. The badges are real glass enamel, and the metal tends to warp in the firing process. The badges came with double sided tape but as you can see from the pix, the edges attach fine but the center is raised. I went to the parts stores and could not find thicker tape... I found what looks like the same tape it came with... should I put on 2 layers? Will that last? I thought about only putting two layers in the middle and leaving one layer on the outsides.... Please give me your input! What will work? BTW, what is the best way to take the badges off now that I put them on?

You bought them from your dealer or JCW? Maybe they have a solution?

No, from a private seller....in GB. The seller was a little stumped.... I really like the way it looks!

Can you bend them slightly without breaking them? Try that.

Hmmm, seems like you ought to be able to exchange that defective "warped" badge for one that lays flush... Private seller kinda quashes that idea dang it.

They DO look pretty cool .

Or, If heat was used to create it, maybe it could be used to "straighten" it?

Put it in the microwave with a towel over it and a "BFB" (large brick) on top of it? (I am KIDDING!).

Good luck, that's a tough one,
Tatt

No, they are metal and GLASS enamel... so it would break

The seller is very accomodating; however, the process does cause some warping, so most have some curve. No, the whole glass thing prevents the use of heat and pressure....

ALL I NEED IS A BIT MORE THICKNESS IN THE TAPE.... this is SO frustrating

Maybe try an Artist Supply store. I swear in terms of time spent, those are just as bad as when I dare to venture into a Border's Books or something...

I get lost for HOURS drooling over all the kewl rapidograph pens and such... and I Always find something that makes me think "I should GET one of these" (but not always for whatever-it-is intended use :smile.

Keep lookin,
Tatt

Can I double up the 3M Attachment tape? Will it hold? I thought of doubling it up in the center where it curves... Any thoughts?

Maybe if you had a kind of resin compound or something like Bondo, put it on the back and then waited till it dried and sanded it so the surface is flush and FLAT, then you could affix with heavy duty double side tape.
I'd try the compound on something else and make sure the tape sticks before putting it on this, tho.

My only concern would be, as the bondo ages will the integrity stay in tack? I can't see sticking the tape to bondo as being a good alternative.... I would think that sticking the tape to itself would be more long term....

Any bodywork experts out there?

Yes you can. I would suggest using the gray (3M?) auto trim tape and a sharp knife. It will hold like there is no tomorrow. (Just in the center section to fill the gap.)

You would probably be the only one to notice that it's bowed.

I bought 2 types.. one "Super Strength" and the other with "Acrylic"... any thoughts on which one is better? They are both 3M and both gray...

I am not sure of the names you just gave - it's just a gray tape with a red carrier avialable at most any auto parts store.

Which ever you use, you have to remember that you are not doing a permanent modification. In other words, the emblem can be removed if you don't like the results, as with (most) any other badge stuck on the car. I have used this kind of tape for years, and will last longer than what it's attached to...
