Parcel Shelf Install Problem 05 MCS

I may be nuts, but the euro parcel shelf which is suppose to be the easiest of installations doesn't seem that way on my July build 05 MCS The problem is the right side screw hole and associated molding/flashing /trim is at least a 1/4" off from fitting.

The bottom clips are fine, the Left Hand Side Screw hole and trim lines up. My first take on this is that the right hand of the euro parcel shelf is hitting a metal piece/bracket assembly (it also has a wire harness attached to it) that is immediately behind the back of the parcel shelf.

Anyone else heard of this problem on any Minis and in particular 05s or am I doing something dumb?

Thanks in Advance,

Tom Der

No, you're not the only one. I faced the same issue when I installed the headunit myself. The right one is not aligning. Don't remember what I did, think I just forced it.

Ditto. I kept pushing the RH side back until I could get the screw up there. I also had a problem in that the screw was so tight in the plastic nut that it broke off part of the dash. Advice on that is lube the screw so when it goes on slightly offset because it won't line up exactly.

Thread both screws in both upper holes (some sort of lubricant will help) and remove before you put the shelf in place. Then use an awl to try to line the holes up before inserting the screws.

I just ordered a parcel shelf from classic mini, the response from their parts department was that there should be no problem fitting that to a 2005... we'll see about that when it gets here. WEll, when that an dmy iceLink get here, I don't see the point in not doing both at the same time.

It fit in my MCS05! Not sure why it is not an option from the factory.

Not a standard feature in the US due to DOT regulations.

I've got an '05 MCS with the parcel shelf... It installs just fine, and you'll find it's just as much of a pain to install in an '05 as it is with the earlier cars...

i didnt even screw it in, the top part just kinda wedged itself in there and refuses to budge unless i use a significant amount of force. Took about 2 minutes to remove the old one and snap the parcel shelf in place. I kept the screws in case i decide to screw it in later, but as of now ive got a whole bunch of stuff stowed in there for more than a month and its rock solid.

I've got one side like that, and if it doesn't want to budge, I'm not going to mess with it!

Hey AC, if you're afraid to give it a shot, I've got a 2003 MC that'll be happy to take it off your hands!
Jk, go for it. Shouldn't be that hard.

Installed one in my '05 MCc. Lining up the screws was a b**ch, specially the right side. But loving it.

I am glad to hear other people had difficulty. The other posts made it sound so simple. I had a VERY difficult time with my installation. I finally left it in place with no screws holding it. This is a fine solution until I get in an accident and the shelf comes down and slices my legs off. Sorry for the graphic description, but I think the potential for disaster exists with no screws holding it in. I think I may re-install the original unit until I have the patience to try to install it again.

It sounds as if the trick is to force it and to lube the screws to allow them to catch earlier.

Any other advice, please let me know.

M

It just needs lots of elbow grease. In my experience (new unit from Classic MINI), the left screw went in easily, and the right one was tough. I managed to force it though (being careful not to lose or break the plastic holding clip).

I put mine in this weekend and like others have said the right hand screw is a bear. The screwholder you install is sloppy so you loose an eighth inch there, plus its off alignment by another eighth inch or more.

I wish I had read LeftyS7's post prior to install. I did use an awl to force alignment, then you have to push up on it real hard to hold it and the screw holder in place while you remove the awl and insert screw. What I didn't do was lube the threads which would have helped!

I whipped out my dremel and clipped some of the shelf off on the right side to get the part in better. But that only helped it to fit better but still no screws needed. So it popped in just fine and I think it will stay that way. Similar to how original knee bolster was.

I like this one, so where can I get it?
Anyway Octane Guy, install was easy then I thought. Only takes me 5 minutes to take the old parcel shelf off and put in a new one. Cool more storage space.

The Euro knee bolster is NLA from US dealers ...

I bought mine from someone who managed to order two from a US dealer before MINI USA put the kibosh on doing so around mid-2003.

I know the factory has screwed up on several occasions and fitted these on US spec cars:

In most cases the dealers had to remove them.

I just spent 40min out in the cold trying to install this damn thing!!!

The clip are too loose and dont line up with the holes!

But i think the real problem is that the lower clips are impossible to catch on. And since they dont catch, the shelf wont line up with the screw holes on top.

Anyone figure out a way to get those clips to catch?

Ok, something is defintely wrong. I cant even screw in the torx screws into the blue clips IN MY OWN HANDS. I can get past the thin tab, but not into the base of the blue clips themselves. And im supposed to be able to install these while the tabs are loose under the shelf!?

Also, i cant get the lower clip on the shelf to click in.. it doesnt. I even shaved down the tabs some to try to force it in.. no go.

I believe teh 06 may have something different going on. You can only install the euro shelf straight in, you cant connect the tabs first and then swivel it up into place.

ScatPack I had the same problem. What I did was just push in place and it stays just fine. No clips and no screws
