2005 MCS Convertable with Brake Light Mod

Ok, I figured it out and completed the rear foglight / brakelight mod on my MCS Convertable tonight. I researched the wiring and I am able to install the jumper on the convertable by removing the passenger taillight.
Here is the result;

You have to admit it really lights up the backend. I like the wrap around look of the lights.

I will be a doing a posting about this, but this Brake Mod is very different from the earlier mod. This mod very clearly requires a jumper and my jumpers have the diode built into them, so the rear foglights will still work with switch if installed. I will be able to tell owners what wire to use in the wiring harness to get the power back to the rear foglight plug. Another feature of this is if an owner would rather use a backlight and not install the rear foglight, a simple relocation of the jumper in the taillight plug will allow this.

My kit will be available from a MINI vendor within the next two weeks. The kit will priced to make it cheaper to buy my kit then build the jumpers on your own.

Could we get a slightly better explaination on what this does?

I'm waiting on an 05' MCS with the Rear foglight. Does this make the rear fog light up when you hit the brakes also? Does it not do this already?

Thanx!

Yes, this allows you use the rear fog light as a brake light. No, it does not do this aready. So if you have the rear foglights you need to hit the switch to turn them on. This mod jumpers the brake light to the rear fog light and turns this light into an additional brake light, when the fog light switch is in the off position. When the fog lights are on this mod has no effect, will not change the brightness of the light or anything.

Ahh ok, thanx! Now thats pretty damned kool. I'd be really interested in this. Looks like it should be a very cheap mod, under $15-$20 bucks if your going to be selling it through a vendor i would hope. Otherwise it might be about $10-$12 bucks for someone to personally do it themselves?

It will be well under $20.00 including USPS Priority shipping. I am trying to keep the cost low. The lower the cost to the owner the easier it is to justify purchasing rather than try to build it yourself. Time is money and I am all about saving time and making something easier for the lowest price.

My '05 MCS was one the first builds (July), so it just has the blank back there. Still debating on backup light or brake light for that slot. What is the cost for the light assembly itself?

Ok the kit was installed on a 2005 MCS, I did not have to remove the tail light and all work completed on the passenger side of car. The install took about 20 minutes again as I had to find the correct wires. My buddy was really happy with the result and there are now two 2005 MCS's with the brake light modification.

Any update on this mod? A DIY article, or availability of mentioned kit? Just really looking for an update.

I'm guessing their not going to post the process since they're working on making it a kit for sale. If it was just posted then they wouldn't make as much money. No offence to them, just business.

To enable the rear foglight as a brake light requires that you unwrap the wiring harness at the rear of the car along with upwrapping the tail light connector wiring harness. Once this is done you install a jumper between the tail light wiring and the rear fog light wiring. Then you re-wrap the wires with electrical tape. I have developed a spiling adapter that hooks up quickly and easily and is removable. My adapter has a diode soldered into the wire and is completly heat shrink wrapped for protection.

It is not about the money, the instructions are very detailed and the kit that I developed has everything needed to enable the light as a brake light or backup light. This modification can not be done without the jumper and if I posted directions people could possibily install something other than a jumper. I do not want this. If you want to do it on you own just upwrap the wires in the passenger rear compartment and remove the rear foglight in the bumper. You will see what wires that run to the rear foglight light in the passenger rear access panel wrapped by themselves. I am not selling this kit for a lot of money (Under $15.00 shipped), I just want to do what I have always said, provide a mod for MINI owners that is inexpensive and easy. If anyone has any questions about this you can email me minirolls@msn.com

I look at this as a time vs money situation, if you have the time then you can figure it out, if you have the money and do not want to waste the time then I have the solution.

Thanks, mini-rolls. Right now our Cooper has a blank plate at the rear fog location. I will try to get a rear fog light and then contact you.
