Proper installation of Voltmeter

I am thinking of installing a voltmeter to my MCS. I was told that the proper reson for a voltmeter is to read how many volts are running to the Fuel Pump. As the revs climb, it is very important to see if there is enough voltage being supplied to the fuel pump. Has anyone hooked up a voltmeter that can tell me more about this?

Thanks,
ARLY

Being that the MINI has a pretty well distributed electrical system, the voltage at any 'core' point will be within a tenth of a volt or so of what is delivered to any of the accessories. The easiest and best place to tap into for voltage sensing would be at the fuse box, at any point that becomes live with the key in the run position. You can use a fuse tap and pick this point out of the fuse box, or where I tapped in, the violet wire with black tracer and yellow stripes at the brake switch, under the steering column.

I think I would just tap into a switched fuse myself as GreatBear commented
above.

The voltmeter is basically the detailed version of a battery light on the dash. (I think they're nice to have and it's too bad car manufacturers mostly just put a battery light instead of this in.) Voltmeter usually stays in the 14v range with the engine running and when you use accessories like the A/C, or the electric power steering, you will see the voltage drop a bit. Depending where your gauge will be mounted (I'm assuming steering column by tach w/ gauge pod?) Right under the steering column is probably the easiest point to tap into for 12v power. I tapped the solid green wire on the bottom of the steering column cluster. Turns on and off w/ the ignition.
