Anyone have a Yakima rack w/ Q Towers?

I am working on my removeable rally light bar project, and am assembling parts from various sources. I have decided to use a single Yakima rack bar with fairing (both to hide the electronics and cut down on wind noise) and a custom aluminum crossbar with alumiwelded tabs to mount 3 Hella 4000 driving lights. Control will be by wireless remote from inside the car.

Now, since this is a blind project, i.e. I do not have the car yet, I need to find someone with a Yakima Rack to let me know about the sunroof. I have been told that you can not open the sunroof when a Yakima rack is affixed, but I believe the interference is with the back bar set, not the front.

Does anyone have a Yakima rack? Does the sunroof clear the front bar, if that is the only bar attached?

Any help in this matter would be greatly appreciated.

Front bar is not a problem. Rear bar barely touches.

Yakima (or maybe Thule) but I'm sure its Yakima now makes lights that mount to their racks you might want to check these out. I saw them at REI but they are not listed on their website. Thule is also moving to an all adapting rack sytem that will fit on all OEM racks.

Joe,
I had installed probably over a thousand Yakima racks in my days working for a kayak and canoe dealership..... They are by far a much better product than the Thule.... and with the flat lines of the MINI on the roof and within the doors you should have a few inches in either direction to play with when installing. The front bar would not make contact with the SR. And as someone mentioned above Yakima does indeed make a light kit that mounts directly to the bars. the only concern I have not having mounted one a MINI is that the front windows may hit the clips when it raises itself, Yakima may have found away around this when designing the clip or simply just added a rubber sticky to both sides of the clip, one to prevent paint scratch, one to prevent window scratch! The other option is putting the clip behind the rubber weather stripping.Good luck and it seems like a very feasible project. And if you are having a difficult time purchasing a 1/2 set of Qtowers /bars. Feel free to PM me and I should be able to get you a set shipped out for a decent price.
