GP2 Belly Pan: increase in MPG?

Hey NAMers, how many of you have installed the GP2 belly pan? Did you notice an increase in MPG?

I remember hypermilers talking about sealing off the bottom of their Honda Civic's engine bays with sheet metal and getting dramatic improvements in fuel economy. I was always too worried about what this would do to trap heat in the bay to do it to my car. The GP2 belly pan looks like it pretty well covers the entire engine bay, but with enough louvers to keep heat under control. If it bumps up fuel economy by even a couple MPG, it would pay for itself in a few years.

It makes sense that it would help the mpg's, since it's less drag. I couldn't imagine owning a mini that is naturally low to the ground and having the entire from exposed to road debris. No one wants to drive around with a grocery bag stuck half way in their motor

The GP shield is standard on most Euro and other market MINIs. My cousin in the UK has a Cooper SD and the shield is standard. I installed one on my 09 MCS and it did cause a slight increase of mpgs.

Coming from EU I can say that car cost more to customers over there so with the sharp US competition I can see MINI try to cut their loss anyway they can on things customersmight not notice!

Its a very nice pan, we have been running it for awhile. We have not really noticed any large MPG change, but it does keep the dirt down and a less noise generated from the bottom of the engine, so quieter . And it looks very nice also.

JCW GP 2 Belly Pan Kit

Think the MINI SD get the more insulated version as well as the larger insulation under the hood for the D version.

Did you get to see the diesel belly pan to see if its like the GP2 one. I thought they were similar but the diesel ones has more insulation and less vents. They show different part numbers then from the GP2 Euro and US version 51757330566.

Thanks and let me know if you have pics, curious what it looks like up close.

Yea, buts its easy to remove hold in the middle of the pan with one hand. And work your way around on the 8 speed screw with a phillips head. They twist out with about half a turn or more. Designed that way. Then lock tight when tightened. Had mine out multiple times for service work and oil change.

thanks

Eh. Seems like a PITA. I'd want to see hard data on MPG increases or sound reduction before adding that.

It is a nice looking piece though.

Thanks!

The GP2 Pan is easy peasy. Actually, its harder to do the oil change filter itself then to take this pan off, with a stubby Phillips , working it from the back to front the pan could come off without jacking up the car. And its keep the dirt off the bottom of the engine.

Don't have raw figures for you , sound does go down as it insulates the noise, but wind tunnel tested by MINI JCW. More info linked in the thread.

thanks

Well if its not that hard to remove then I guess it won't be that much of a hassle come oil change time then.

If there is any improvement on the gas mileage it would have to be at constant highway speed above a certain speed. From our gas mileage data with moderate speed I would say improvements are not noticeable. To be fair though I drive a convertible and with the top down it is not likely the most efficient mpg vehicle to start with...

Nope. I looked at them all, this is the best made belly pan and it's also has the best price, for what it is. As far as removal it takes less then one minute and it's so light. You just move it to the side until your done with whatever work your doing. I've taken mine off and on, at least 20 times. My car is a DD so on the weekend it gets jacked up on jack stands and I do some type of work or maintence. It also works well with the side underpanels as well as th GP2 diffuser. I think all three work together.

Just ordered my kit 51757330566KT & wanted desperately to add the middle section but tight ends in our house, so if any coupons available would appreciate so much on next. Looking forward to praise reports as others testified herein! Great products, happy to know ECS Tuning from a newbie. .

You are welcome. We currently don't do coupons. Never hurts to ask. Some items will go on sale ( like our MINI Wheel and tire sets ) or clearance which you will get an email if signed up or it will be posted to the forums. You can also select your MINI from the drop down menu then click sale or clearance icon in the top right of our site to see what we have.

Thanks
