shift lever spinning around

Wanted to see whats underneath the leather cover that "dresses" the gear lever so i tried to unscrew it. Gave it a hard spin and now its all spinning round without stopping to lock in one position. Did something break?

I assume you mean the gear shift **** is "spinning". The **** is not removed by unscrewing it from the shift lever. It is held on by a nylon tab inside the **** and is removed by forcefully pulling it straight up (it just pops off). https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...hift-****.html You've probably broken the nylon retainer inside the ****. If the shift lever itself is "spinning", you may have done serious damage to the shift linkage. Try just pulling the **** straight up to remove it and make sure you haven't damaged the lever itself. Look up inside the **** to see if the retainer is just out of position and can be repositioned. If the **** can't be repaired, you're going to have to spring for a new ****.

What about the leather that covers/surrounds the leaver? Shouldn't this be taken of before pulling the ****? How do i do that?

Just pull the boot down. There's a plastic collar inside the boot that fits over an extension protruding from the bottom of the shift ****. Unfortunately the boot is a little hard to slip back over the bottom of the **** when you try to put it back into place so you may have to fiddle with it a bit to get it back on. This pic may help.
