I've been waiting for Alta to come out with their light kit and they finally have. I love it! Damn the rocks, I'll put protectant on them.

What do you think?

Nice idea. Even better without the branding. Best for those not required to display front license plates.

It looks cool but aren't rally lights supposed to be at least level with the standard headlights if not higher for them to function best?

How long would it take you to get pulled over while running with those things on???

They are meant for lighting up dark empty roads, not in traffic where you would get pulled over

What the heck is a "mouse style" switch?
Is it not wired to work with our toggles?

Looks cool and its mostly for looks I guess  Below the bumper is a poor spot for lights but IPF are great lights. "Mouse style switch" is the little plastic box on the end of a wire with a button on it... like a computer mouse.

I have OEM Rally lights with a dash-switch. I was disappointed that it wasn't a toggle. AND 2-lights are really bright -- 4 would be unreal. I'm not a purest, but aren't most MINI rally lights above the bumper, which would allow for higher light on the road? .... I have a front license plate that would not allow these. They do look cool.

If you are gonna really be a purist about it, the classic mini's rally lights were much lower (more like the alta ones then the new OEM ones)

The Alta website talked about both fogs and driving lights. Fogs should be mounted low and driving lights should be mounted high. So, this is a good installation for fog lights and for driving lights on level ground. ) owners don't. So, I know a Miata owner that asked himself the question -- just what is a front license plate? What makes it legitimate? In Illinois we only have stickers (or whatever their official name is) on the back plate, there's nothing on the front. So, he figured it was the digits on the plate. In the interests of both aerodynamic efficiency and shedding unneccessary ounces, he trimmed the plate so that there was an approximately 1/4 inch border around the digits. He never got into trouble with this set up.

Thoughts?

A question that was asked earlier, and I am curious about myself, what about airflow to the A/C stuff that lives right behind there. Is it possible to mount this bar to be even with the headlights (on the upper grill)?

Just curious, in NJ we need front license plates.

Thanks for the close up of the front of the car. That is truly a sweet set up! Very, very slick looking.

If your set up is discussed in detail in another thread, please point me to it, otherwise a few questions please

Yes, Harald, who is one of my customers, runs the car in the Targa Newfoundland Rally. He has a tire rack on the roooof, with two giant spots on the roof. Pretty trick effect. I'll dig through and see if I can find any photos for you.

I have the Alta kit here for eval. I'll put them on and get the car to the track to determine if there is an issue with cooling. It would certainly seem as though there is reduced air flow, but the radiator is also getting air from the top slats, so it may not be enough of a reduction to effect a significant change. I'll let you know some time next week what I find.

Hope that helps!
RAndy

1) Is that the Moss set up? Nope. It's an old badge bar, reinforced through the grill. The yellow lights (fog lamps, i believe) are ran through the high beams. The spots are run through a switch (picture below). The lights are Hella 500's, which are cheap ($35 a piece). My set up was around $150 or so.
2) 2 driving lights and 2 fogs? Yes sir.
3) Did you have to upgrade the wiring harness? No. I used the Mini cooper driving lamp directions. The spots are ran directly through the battery terminal, to the swtich (again, see below)
4) How are the set up to come on? Fogs with the factory fogs? Driving lights with the high beams? See #1

Here's the switch I mounted:

It controls the spots, the small yellow lights where those grill thingy holes are, and the spot lamp I have installed on the back. Here's a picture of that:

It's on the right side... and yes, it's illegal, and no, i havent seen anyone else with it. haha

hope that helped!
