Great idea maneeto. I'm a woodworker, now why didn't I think of that? How did you fasten it and how secure is it?

just a question to anyone who might know..... was wondering if the extra weight of the whalen can cause early/excessive wear on the shifter linkage/cable/mechanism (as you can see, not sure what's under there)..... been on the fence in ordering one for my car but if anyone can clarify this, then it might be time to get off and order me one.... how about pics too of your whalen ****, personally designed or what not..... :smile:

Honestly I have not noticed any additional wear on the system since I installed the Whalen. Its not we are talking about a 10lb bowling ball!

Here is mine installed on my B&M short shifter

[QUOTE=MGCMAN]My Whalen is heavy and its extra weight helps smooth out shifts. Its construction is unsurpassed, talk about over-engineering. About the only negative is that in the winter, after a prolonged time outside, it gets COLD, COLD, COLD. Wear a glove from December through March if you live in the snowbelt and have a Whalen.

I just pop mine off and take it inside with me. Set it on the catch-all table next to the heater, and in the morning it's toasty warm.
Jim

I wish I hadn't read this thread. I had convinced myself that the stock **** was acceptable. When I read all the tributes to Whalen--well it became too much. The comment that the stock one looks like a dixie cup put me over. I just ordered. Polished --of course--more bling. Nick PS Had a nice chat with the inventor/producer himself!! Nice guy.

I couldn't understand the Whalen fascination so I just ordered one. I'm an official convert now...

heavier + smaller + personalization = quick and fabulous mod

I had a really annoying rattle at the base of my stick. I could hear it in 1st, 3rd, and 5th gears. The dealer spent hours trying to fix it--he pulled it apart and replaced some parts...but the rattle didn't go away. I put on a Whalen **** and the extra weight stopped the rattle.

I went to Michaels (craft store) and purchased a dolls head out of wood. It already had a center hole at the bottom. I drilled it out, then drilled it out some more. I had a left over mounting clip from my R-Speed chrome shifter and I just fitted that in the hole and then it clicked into place. voila !

My MC40 had the wrong shift ****, the regular white top with black lines, leather under, and it was good and all. Then they changed it to the special edition ****, and it was lighter, no leather on the bottom but actually nothing, so easier to palm, and yes, the shifts did feel a lot better.

Sounds like a bunch of bullmumbojumbo, but however u want to customize ur car and make u feel more comfortable or make u feel however u want to is the descision, and I'd recommend changing the **** if you want to feel a better shift.

Whalen vs stock in grams

Whalen = 508 - 1lb 1 7/8 oz

Stock = 185 - 6 5/8 oz

feels good to shift

Good info. I always wondered what the exact difference was, but never wanted to take the Whalen out of the car! Thanks.

If you like the Whalen, I'll be interested to see what you think of the Threshold Motorsports Shift ****...

Threshold is a couple of bright and talented guys down here in Atlanta. They started out doing installs for Randy's clients. Still do. But now they service the MINI community on several levels, especially the autocross crowd.

One night I was over there for some project, and they pulled out this gorgeous shift **** made in their shop. Maybe a tad heavier than the Whalen, but the feel of it - the way it fits (my hand - YMMV), is the best in my experience.

I think it was $80. I replaced my $100 UUC **** on the spot.

I have no affiliation with them. Depending on what I wanted and the availability of both the product and the vendor, I've done business with Terry Sayther, Randy Webb, RSpeed (the other great Atlanta outfit), RDR, Minipilo, M7, and Threshold...

Been satisfied with all.

I'm supposed to meet up with SpiderX, who is also here in Atlanta, sometime in the next week or so. We both have a few mods, but some are different in the way we chose to go. So, I'm looking forward to experiencing another modded MCS...

There you have it...

Could you post a picture of this ****? How does it attach? How about the height of the **** compared to stock?

I am getting close to ordering a Whalen but I've not heard or seen anything about this **** and would like some more info. Thanks.

I heard Threshhold mentioned once or twice on the AltantaMinis website, but I think you have to be an insider to know about them, because there is absolutely no advertisement or "get the word out" process. I think people hear about them from word of mouth.

Do they have a store that sells products? A website? How can we see the new ****.

I've just seen your request and I have sent a note to Scott at Threshold to see if he can post the pictures, etc.

Hi guys! Brandon Myers (thresholdb) and myself own Threshold Motorsports. We are a local shop in Gainesville, Georgia close to Road Atlanta. We mainly cater to the AtlantaMINIS club with installs and such but lately, as Jim Smith has mentioned (thanks big guy!) have started making some shift *****. Brandon came up with the idea while he was attending one of his CNC machining courses at a local tech school. I was tired of my stock shift **** especially on my Alta short shifter, so I thought it was a great idea. Plus I really didn't want to pony up the bucks for the other shifters, I'm cheap. What we found out that other MINIACs have found out was that a heavier shift **** helps when shifting. Plus we just thought it would be cool to have a 100% stainless steel **** with the shift pattern engraved in them. Our shift **** will fit the stock shifter shaft and all of the aftermarket ones. It has a couple of set screws arranged 90 degrees apart so it will not loosen up on you. We do encourage the use of some blue loctite when installing. We also made the height a little higher to make up for some of the length difference I experienced on the Alta short shifter. When I get home today I will weigh it for you and post it back with some pics. We sell the shift ***** for $79.95. We have two versions currently, a 5 speed for the Cooper and a 6 speed for the S. You can also go with the plain (no engraving) version.

Brandon and I have kept Threshold Motorsports pretty low key since it is a side job for the both of us. I work as a programmer and Brandon works at Panoz Auto Development. He's got the cool job!

My phone # is 770-965-9223 if you have any questions. I usually get home after 5 so if you call before that just leave a message and I will get back to you ASAP.

Thanks!
Scott Grandfield
