What is so great about the Whalen ****? I can't figure this out since I have not seen it in person or been able to use it. Why are people so enamored of this shifter ****? Somebody let me know what's what.

What is so great about the Whalen ****? The way it feels.

Mine is on a stock shifter and it is great. I'm thinking about the B&M short shifter but want to try one in someone else's vehicle first to see if I like it.

why whalen

PEople love it because it's nice and heavy, feel great, and are a bit exclusive (about as much as a good CAI)

According to Mayor "Diamond" Joe Quimby, the Whalen **** "tastes great, makes woman appear more attractive, and makes a person virtually invulnerable to criticism."

Is it really that much better than the stock ****? I guess I am going to have to track someone down with this **** to find out what it's all about. For some reason, I just can't imagine that just the **** would make that big of a difference.

Thanks for the responses.

Yes, it really is much better. I've had my Whalen for over 2 years now and when I drive MINIs with the stock **** I'm suprised at how notchy the gearbox is. Plus their interior doesn't look as sharp as mine.

It's one of the few things on my MINI that added weight, and I love it! Having that mass there just feels so right. Aesthetically, especially with the customization Doug can provide, I haven't seen anything more beautiful.

The quick-release fitting (like on a pneumatic tool) is a very nice feature that allows one to easily remove the ****. I do so when I must park my car in a non-shaded spot all day, like at work during the summer. I'll take the **** into the office with me to keep it from getting too hot in the sun. And in the winter, I do the same at night - taking the Whalen into the house, keeping it warm on the tiles by a wood-burning stove. Driving the MCS on a cold morning is nice, but with a toasty Whalen, the grin-factor is even greater .

I suppose a Whalen's ease of removal might also serve as a theft deterrent for a would-be thief who sees a stick with with no ****. And if he still does try, the Whalen would make a great projectile to hit him with .

Yeah, I like it...

A question for those of you who actually own one. Will it work on the both the stock and the B&M or Alta shifter? I have a stock shifter now and want to get a shift **** but I may upgrade to a B&M in the future so I don't want to buy another **** later.

Stock and B&M, yes. Alta, from what I recall, no.

Yes. If you are the kind of person that likes the "feel" of something being just perfect, then this is the **** for you. If you get the chrome plating, it feels just great to hold in your hand. The extra weight is great, the look adds to the car, and the fact that you can take it off on a hot day and put it on your desk at work is an added plus.

It is really hard to fully explain unless you have one. But for some of the stupid things that people waste there money on in this board for the Mini, this is definitely not one of them. The quality is second to none. And for the number of people who have one on this board, with not a single negative comment, it must say something about the product. I am not sure you can find another product on this board with the same reputation.

Here is mine on the B&M SS. I drove a friends with the stock shifter and stock **** the other day. I had forgotten how much nicer mine is! If you watch you can find both on eBay from time to time and save yourself a bit of cash.

In active driving at the track my stock and Moss ***** would come off in the middle of a shift...definately not a good thing! The Whalen **** locks into place and it solved the problem. But you have to feel it to understand what people are talking about...it really makes a difference. I kept it when I sold my 2002 Killerbee and have it in the new Cabrio Bee. When I get the short shifter it will have to go on or no short shifter for me.
I believe Whalen can make a **** to fit the Alta SS kit by special request.

I bought mine after getting to "test" yours Mick at the spring STL MINI Club Rally! Sold me. After I pulled my stock **** off during aggresive shifting, I realized it had to go. The Whalen never even budged once during my track events this year. A definate must have for serious drivers.

Here is a link to Whalen: http://www.whalenshiftmachine.com/home.htm

Good guy to work with, and the ability to customize the **** to your tastes is great too!

I believe Doug made the very first one for me (I had one on my Z3) and I have 'sold' many people on them since.

One downside if you live in a cold climate is they get untouchable in Winter - solution? Go the NAVY store and buy a baby mitten - great fit and lots of colour choices (and you get a spare)

This is the time of year that I have to begin using leather driving gloves to deal with a cold ****, especially the Whalen. My B&M improved the feel of shifting and the Whalen has made it even better.....along with styish looks.... clearly a worthwhile investment for raising your Mini's fun quotient.

Very nice design, eppie! I'm thinking of ordering one with the shift pattern inside of, what else? A four-leaf clover!

MINI modified the shift levers in '04, and your shift **** will need to modified to fit your new car properly.
E-mail me at whamac@msn.com, and we'll get you fixed up.

I have a 2005 MCS and installed a Whalen shift **** two weeks ago with no problems. I've removed it and put it back several times without any problems. I really don't think the shift lever was changed at all for the '05. Remember that, when installing the Whalen, it must be properly aligned and pushed downward with some effort, all while the quick release is held upward. Two handed might be easier. I have not had any problems with the Whalen and the 2005 shift lever.
