Yes, I've read all about how people with a Cooper install the (in my opinion, unsightly) Cooper S gas cap on them. Has anyone done the reverse and installed a Cooper OEM gas door (flush, body color) on an S and removed the chrome dealy-ma-bob door that came on the car? Please share info, links, pictures, anything! When I search it only brings up the S gas cap installation.

Cheers!
Tracy

There's been a thread in the past 48 hours or so... I'll see if I can find it...

Hmm, actually it's a thread about the opposite, but check out the post by KerMini; he/she is doing exactly what you want to. Try PMing him/her/it if he/she/it doesn't post in this thread!

Actually I just purchased the Cooper fuel filler door for my MCS today. I dropped it off at the body shop to be painted and I'll attempt the install Saturday. The parts schematic at the dealership shows both the Cooper and the S doors in the only exploded view with all the door assembly parts. It seems all the other parts are the same on either model. I'll take photos and post next week.

be warned - the Cooper's fuel door is hinged on a very cheap feeling piece of plastic and the door itself doesn't rest flush with the surrounding body work on many cars. All reasons why I swapped out mine for the original design (which never made it to the Cooper, where along with the MCS, it was originally intended).

Thanks all! KerMini, I look forward to pics and tips/hints you have to offerafter your attempt at the feat. It makes sense if you can swap one way you could swap the other way. I hope it goes well for you. Would the parts department print out the diagrams for you?
Thanks again!

Since the MC cover can be changed to the MCS cover the reverse must be true.
There are a few other aftermarket deluxe covers available but they are expensive.

Another option is to paint the chromed gas cap MCS cover to match the body color or even to contrast like dark silver with darksilver wheel arches, lower bumper trim, and side skirts.

Whew, I had been holding my tongue a while on this one... noticed the same thing on a recent showroom visit - the MA shushed up as I "wiggled" the open fuel door up and down (GENNNTLY, of course

KerMini, was the part you purchased under $10? Hard to believe the Cooper fuel filler door is so cheap. Did it come primed and ready to paint or need prep work? Is that the only part you needed to purchase? So, since you don't replace the S's hinge, just the door (right?), is it sturdier than the same door on a Cooper since the Cooper hinge is cheapo plastic? Sorry for the ?'s, can't wait to hear about your install and see awesome pictures of it!

Hey gang....any one waiting for details on the MC door on an MCS. I had my matte trim painted to match the body and the door painted too. When I picked the parts up on the 6th I was unhappy with the job they did. I sent the parts including the door back to the body shop and then had to leave town on short notice. I just got back on the 21st and have not picked up the parts. I'll do it tomorrow and install the door and take pictures. Then I'll post them for all to see!

UPDATE

I went to the shop to pick up my parts and damn if they hadn't even started on them! They've had two weeks to redo them and they're still sitting there. I ran into the owner of the shop and he agreed with me the first attempt was, to quote him..sh*tty". He assured me he would do the painting himself and make it right. So now I'llbe waiting until Friday to pick them up. To make matters worse I'll be in Michigan until Sunday, luckily the friend who recommended the shop will pick them up. Stay tuned.

Well I tried the install today......not as simple a swap as I thought. The bracket/arm that holds the MCS cap does not accept the MC door. A close look at a manual will be required to find out what else I need. In addition the fit isn't quite there, the opening on the MCS seems a bit larger than the MC door. I'm not sure I'll persue this mod any farther but instead have my MCS cap painted or powder coated to match. While powder coating would be more durable, I don't think the finish will match the body paint as well.

Look above to left under Features. "RSpeed How-tos"
There is a detailed "How-to" for putting MCS fuel door on MC.
Just do the opposite. You will need the compleat door and hinge assembly.
Parts cost about $40 from the dealer, plus painting the door.

KerMini, sorry you ran into issues. Yeah, after inspecting fuel doors on both models I think you have to get the cheapo black plastic door hinge for a Cooper (like $16) and the door twists onto the hinge's base plate. Other than that, I'm not sure how to attach the Cooper hinge to the S an still keep the hard plastic, body-painted interior ring. I'll check out the how-to instructions and figure reversing them as was mentioned. There may be a small gap between the car body and the door, but my guess is that if you have that interior ring body color, it will be less noticable than if it were black like it comes standard on the Cooper. Keep us updated with your progress!

You don't need to paint anything but the metal door. It will be the same parts that
are on tne MC and fit the same.

I have an MCS with an MC gas cap cover door, although I wouldn't recommend the method I used to do this. I traded my black/white 02 MC for a black/white 04 MCS. I asked the dealer to switch the gas cap doors (I liked the plain black look better than the chrome look). No painting required! They said no problem, but it turned out to be a bit more involved than anticipated. I didn't watch the process but it took about 45 minutes and involved removing the rear wheel! And, indeed, the door does not fit flush with the body. But I still like it better than the chrome cap.
