My plasti-dip blackout

So Ive had my car 2 weeks max and the mods are on there way. Im so sick of all this ugly chrome so I am deciding to black it out. Since im 17 and and broke I decided plasti dip was my best option.

I went to lowes to buy the cans and what do you know they wont sell it to me because I wasnt 18 . So I got right back in my car and drove down to home depot. They ended up selling it to me there and not only that but it was 2 bucks cheaper per can . So I am off to work, whenI get back I will post pictures of the job. I plan on doing my grille slats, surrounds, gas cap, trim and side scuttles. If I can manage to do half as good as the others on this forum It will turn out great.

Cheers

Haha...

They actually do the same thing here in SC. It must have something to do with the whole aerosol thing. I used to buy spray paint at my Dad's in Apopka, FL all the time when I was about 17. Hmm...

Same thing here too. Like at WalMart, the computer tells them to ID for anything like that... Spray Paint, Sharpies, Certain oils, and degreasers...ect ect

Today it ended up being 52 degrees as a high. I went out to spray my car.... it was about 45. I almost turned into a popsicle. I sprayed both of my headlight rings, I was in a rush so it turned out really bad. The spray its self was awesome, Just my lines werent the cleanest. I am going to strip it all off and respray it piece by piece day by day when I have time. I will post pics when it is done right.

Rather than palsti-dip (Which I assume is the stuff used for insulating metals), do it right. Sand the part, prime it, paint it flat or gloss black. Won't cost a ton if you buy cans of aerosol (once your store allows you to buy it). Though I'm curious how this will look.

This will look better, but it's not reversible. I used plasti dip for my blackout to see if I liked it, and electrical tape on the belt line. It looks pretty good, and can be undone easily if I change my mind or sell the car. I think I might hav it vinyl wrapped, but I digress. Good luck with your project, slow and steady!

I plastidiped every piece of chrome (minus the handles for now) and I needed no sanding to get a good adhesion. Wipe it clean and then 3-4 coats and time to dry in between and it cures great.

Good point but i dont plan on going back. The thing with plasti dip is that under light it looks cheap and industrial . Maybe the jobs i have seen are not done well but i know the blacked out headlights ive seen with plastidip look rough

Here it is on the inside parts but just after the first coat. You can still see the shininess coming through but it goes away with subsequent coats. Here is another teaser

How did you get your chrome headlight rings off? and the grilled surrounds? I was just leaving it on and taping it off but it would look better if I knew how to take them off

Is that a retro fit? The inside of my lights look completely different on my r56?

If nobody mentions how in this thread, there are counteless ones you can search for. Most all of the chrome stuff comes off, which is a must for plastidipping.

Do your homework first lol. Itll look much better

I agree under bright light it looks very flat and industrial is a good way of describing it. It's definitely not the best option, but I just wanted to point out the benefit of reversibility for the OP. For me it's a good trial run, and as I said, I'd like to vinyl wrap it now that I'm sure it looks good on the car.

Yes I just have not completed it 100% therefore no writeup or thread has been dedicated to it. I just like throwing teasers out there. I have a 2009 R56S with stock halogens, dremeled them out and added projectors.

Nice work, i retro fitted e-class merc projectors on to my buddies STI a few years back. Tough but once you realize it is not that bad its cake Sourcing the parts was the hardest part.

Cool. Yeah I went cheap and easy on this one. Bi-xenon are a plus too so I didn't lose high beams.

I like the plasti-dip because its durable AND reversible. Best is to remove the parts to be done and thoroughly clean them with a wax stripper, then apply, you do want to apply in temps higher than 50 i believe (might not adhere/cure properly). Ive had multiple parts done including my grill, headlight rings handles, etc. Theyve held up VERY well throughout 2 winters in New England, and it can easily be pealed off.

Got my rings off next step is the grille. I plan on doing the slats and the chrome surround. How did you pull off the whole grille? There are those 4 or 5 screws under the bonnet, but when I turn them they just spin. And I cant get to the top of the screw to hold it. HELP
